5 Ways A Digital Detox Will Leave You Feeling Refreshed

Is it just me, or do you waste hours of your life on social media before you even realise you’re doing it? According to a recent study, we spend nine hours a day trapped in it.

Tired of being obsessed with my phone, I took a four-day trip to Croatia as the perfect opportunity to see what a world without social media is really like. Even with plenty of incredible views, a historic town to explore and a best friend that I could never tire of, I was still sceptical. I was essentially cutting something that took up nine hours of my day out of my life, how on earth would I cope? But, unexpectedly I admit, I coped far better than I could have ever imagined and managed to get some much-needed perception on my life.

Still doubtful? Here are 5 reasons why you should give it a try:

1.You will learn the importance of living in the moment
We are obsessed with capturing every moment, but that doesn’t mean we are living it. Take the chance to share it with the world out of the equation and the craziest thing happens; you actually enjoy it.

2.You will get far more done
Think about lumping together all the hours we spend on social media into one. Remove that and there’s a whole world of possibilities for what you could do. I chose to spend it learning about the great walls of Croatia, but just getting some work done is good too!

3.Moments will be yours
No matter how many pictures we take, we can never truly capture a moment. The first time I looked out at the Croatian seas could never be truthfully caught, but instead of sharing it on Instagram, it was just mine to keep.

4.Time spent with others will be valued
With no distractions, quality time is easy to have. No notifications tearing away your attention and no interest in comparing what you are doing to others. A good old heart-to-heart can be had once again.

5.You will get to know yourself again
Whenever there is something we want to avoid in life, social media is the perfect distraction. It’s easy to lose sight of who we are and place too much focus on our online identities instead. Take away all of that and you will be perfectly in touch with yourself.

  • #2 is so true. I don’t even want to admit how often during work I turned to my phone for a “minute” social media break. I started to not go on my phone before bed, and that has really helped be disconnect from social media overload =o)

  • Love this – I work in social media so when I’m not at work I switch off as much as I can. Holiday’s especially. I’ve even resorted to leaving my phone locked in a safe so I’m not tempted to check in with work!
