Everyone I know has fallen into the trap of doing something really stupid when they were younger. We have all been there, we’ve all sat there and thought: “What an idiot…”
Now I’m an adult, I’ve had to time to think about what I would do differently or what I would say to myself 5 years ago. Here are 10 things I’d tell my younger, slightly naive, idiot self:
1. Listen to your mom.
Listen to her when she tells you those clothes are too tight and listen to her when she tells pink is not your color. Moms know best. You’ll be thanking her when she pulls out the classic photo albums from your youth and they all feature seriously unwise style choices.
2. Spend more time with family.
Just because you’re young and hormonal doesn’t mean you have to take it out on the ones closest to you. There’ll come a time when you can barely find time to schedule a call home, so make time for your family now!
3. Step away from the makeup!
Just because everyone is caked in makeup, doesn’t mean you should too! You’re older self would appreciate the clearer skin! TRUST ME! Plus, you don’t really know what you’re doing with it…
4. Diets don’t work!
Don’t spend all your time and money on dieting! You will waste your entire teenage years worrying about your figure, only to realize there was nothing to worry about in the first place. Just focus on being young! Leave all that ’till later.
5. Keep your friends close.
Keep in touch with your childhood best friends, get over your pride and text them first, if nothing comes of it, at least you tried! Being stubborn means you might lose close friends. Nobody’s ignoring you out of spite. So just try.
6. No one “steals” your friends away from you.
You’ve grown apart and people change, yes it’s difficult but don’t be bitter about it! Also, stop creating drama when there is none.
7. If you’re ever not happy in a situation, speak up!
Don’t be made to feel like you’re the idiot who’s taken on too much. You have a voice and you’re allowed to use it.
8. Don’t stress about school as much.
Life experience is worth so much more and you’ll be ok! Do your best but also do your best to make memories, too!
9. Take every opportunity that comes your way!
There is nothing worse than staying in over the summer having nothing to do while your friends get internships and go abroad. It seems terrifying now but just go for it.
10. Oh and last, but no means least…don’t give yourself an allergic reaction to try and fit in…
Avoid face-paint at ALL COSTS! You idiot!

Love this! I recently wrote a similar post on my blog called “28 Things I’ve Learned by 28” with many similar points. The wisdom we gain as we get older is priceless!

Calling ourselves an idiot is an unkind and cruel way to speak to ourselves. Everything is stored in our subconscious which doesn’t have a sense of humour so what you practise you become so it’s really important to treat yourself with respect… We are all perfectly imperfect, we are not idiots even if we screw up
#6 and #10 hit the jackpot for me!!! Thanks for sharing this! Always a good time exploring around here <3
