10 Things I Wish I’d Known Before I Moved Out For The First Time

Screen-Shot-2015-08-08-at-13.54.54 ec6250af4c368abcb38895ef23252ba2

We all know that the topic of moving out of home is a scary one. Moving is a transitional part of becoming a successful career woman – as much as we love our parents, we have to manage without them! Below are 10 tips to help you adjust to living in your own home (eek!):

1. Balance your cash

It’s not all fun and games when you live on your own. There will be days when you are rummaging in your very nice designer purse that you bought on pay day (a good idea at the time) for some money to buy a coffee. Balance your cash – bills before your girls night out. If you can find a successful balance where you can still enjoy life, but are paying out your bills first, you’ve cracked the hard part!

2. Pool your assets

Whether you’re off to university or you’re simply getting out of home, take with you as much as possible. Spend your money on something that will benefit you – as tempting as spending it on that new top you’ve seen is, don’t. The regret will come flooding in when you are in desperate need for shampoo and conditioner – one thing you definitely cannot live without!

3. Borrow, Beg and Steal

As much as you will want to splash out on designer tables and posh crockery, starting small is key. Borrow what you can before you can afford to splash out on niceties. Ask around for key pieces for your new place before digging into your purse – someone may be getting rid of some furniture you like!

4. Learn new skills

Unfortunately as you move out you will have to do many things on your own that you may not have tackled before. If cooking isn’t your thing, take some tips from your parents, or watch some videos on YouTube! It also might be time to start learning how to switch on the washing machine…and the tumble dryer too!

5. Your life is not like TV

As you will quickly learn, living alone is far from an episode of “Friends” or “Sex and the City” (cries). Life will never be as easy as it is for Rachel, who seems to sit around and drink coffee all day, and our wardrobe will never be as big as Carrie’s (well, not yet anyway).

6. Treasure your friends

Some days life just isn’t fair, and you need a shoulder to cry on. Keep your friends close and life will be a lot easier. Well, as they say, a problem shared is a problem halved!

7. Don’t disappear

Retreating home can often be a thing we dread, but making time to see your family will be a good way to settle into living alone. Popping over for dinner once a week will remind them you still care, and will keep you in their good books!

8. Time is everything

Living alone can take some getting used to. It can be quite lonely, so seeing friends and family often can be a comforting prospect and remind you that you are never alone in life.

9. Make time for you

Start making time for yourself – after a hard day at work, you deserve a relaxing bath and a very large glass of wine. Life is challenging on your own, but it’s important to cherish the little things in life that make it worthwhile. You earned it, so take time to appreciate the things you have achieved – your home for one!

10. Enjoy yourself

Relish the time you have alone, sometimes it’s nice to spend some time with yourself. Living alone definitely has its perks, pasta for dinner every night of the week! And just think of it this way, you have the whole bed to yourself. Enjoy it, and all the things that come with it.

Lovely readers, CGD has been nominated in the Bloglovin’ Awards 2015 . It would mean the world to us if you could vote for us! It’s thanks to your constant support that we’ve made it this far! Thanks so much. X

This is so true! I can really relate to this, I wish someone told me this before. Points from 1 to 8 is so important in life, I am still struggling with points 1 and 4, still need to learn how to balance my income and learn new skills such as cooking and baking.
    Love this post!

I agree with everything you said Holly! One thing I would add is: get to know your neighborhood fast. It’s good to know your way around, you will feel much better if everything is familiar and you never know what kind of nice places you have around, unless you go look for them.

Take notice of the different cleaning supplies, basic home tools (broom, mop, scrub brushes, etc) around the house. They aren’t “fun” but completely necessary. A basic tool kit- hammer, nails, screw driver, etc- will be extremely useful. As soon as you move to your new place get unpacked and organized as soon as you can. This helps in feeling settled and like it’s your home and not a storage unit. Getting my bed made and the kitchen set up is priority for me.

I agree! When I moved alone to London I was 20 and I thought I was gonna live a Carrie Bradshaw life, but obviously not! I had to learn priorities and that wasn’t easy!
In the end, it turned out perfect but it was extremely hard in the beginning!

This is really great advice, balancing you money and prioritizing is important. No one wants to call home and ask for money because you ran out of food. Also, I wish my life was like Sex in the City! Love that show. :)
