Wondering how to motivate yourself right now? Things seem pretty uncertain and this is when motivation can be hard to find. You can achieve whatever you want in the last few months of the year with just a little bit of motivation, so if you’re looking for a sign to get started – this is it!

To motivate yourself, you need to play some music that gets you going. For me, it’s Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore. For you, it might be the Eye Of The Tiger. If you really want to get it together this year, create a playlist that motivates you to get out of bed (or off the couch) and make it happen.

Meghan Markle shared her motivational morning playlist on her lifestyle website, The Tig before she shut it down, saying “Turn these tracks on as you’re getting ready in the morning when you need a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, or during your next evening celebration.” The music in her headphones encourages her to get up early in the morning, show up to her yoga class, and go for a run, even when she’s not feeling like it. Her top tracks included the Jackson Five and Janelle Monae.

According to the Journal of Science “Focusing on a favorite song combats de-motivating brain signals associated with fatigue or boredom.”  A powerful song can change your mood instantly.  Music can be fun and uplifting or comforting and melancholy.  In fact, “Music’s energizing effects comes from its ability to engage the body’s sympathetic nervous system. The activation of this system readies the body for action whenever we face a challenge in our environment.”

EVERYBODY NEEDS A PICK-ME-UP

Still asking yourself how to motivate yourself? To get yourself motivated you likely need a good old fashioned talking to. I know from experience how easy it is to talk myself out of something, particularly working out, so you need someone (or something) that’s going to change your mind and reverse that procrastination effect. I recommend Will Smith’s video on self-discipline to start with.

Create a playlist of videos that motivate you, it could be transformation videos, or simply inspiring people yelling at you to get it done. This video is inspiring as it’ll remind you that the only person stopping you from doing anything in life is you. Psychology Today notes that if you let your motivation run out when the video does, you won’t achieve anything. But if you remember “Life-changing inspiration verily forces its way out of us, demanding that we take action. That is the inspiration that propels people to monumental acts of courage, willpower, perseverance, and, ultimately, change.”

It needs to come from you, but it can be helped along by people like Will Smith.

WRITE AN ACTION PLAN

Did you know, you are 42% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down, properly. If you break them down into steps that you can actually achieve and write them up in a way that allows you to tackle them one step at a time, instead of trying to rush to get a huge goal accomplished in a short space of time.
