5 Common Mistakes To Avoid If You Want To Create A Successful Blog

Over the years, we’ve spoken to some really cool bloggers. We’ve sat down with everyone from Fleur de Force to Hello Fashion and we’ve asked them the burning questions about creating their blogs. What we discovered was there were a few mistakes that the biggest bloggers had to overcome to get to where they are.

We created The Ultimate Blog Plan to put everything we learned on paper and make success as easy to reach as possible, but just in case you need a refresher here are five mistakes you might just be making…

Mistake number 1: Waiting for your audience to find you

The solution: Take some time to really think about who your audience is. Ask yourself where they live, what they’re interested in and what you can do for them. Then set up a strategy to target the channels they frequent the most.

Mistake number 2: Taking too long to start!

The solution: Start now because you won’t be perfect in the beginning! Do all your planning and research but don’t get stuck in it, just go for it and improve as you go. The most successful bloggers just started as they were and went from there. What you see today isn’t how they started out.

Mistake number 3: Forgetting to be strategic

The solution: Strategy goes a long way! Analyze your content with Google Analytics, look into your SEO strategy, are you using the right keywords? Do you have a social media plan? How often are you going to post and which channels are you going to promote your content on? Are you easy to find? Create a strategy document and go through every area of analyzing you need to do.

Mistake number 4: Not treating your blog like a magazine

The solution: As soon as you write a post and publish it, your blog becomes a brand, it’s out there and represents who you are and what you stand for. You can learn a lot about branding by looking at magazines, why do they choose certain fonts, images, and backgrounds? What kinds of headlines sell content? Take five minutes to look at the front cover of your favorite magazine and find some elements you can look into for your own blog, for example, color schemes, image choices, and logos.

Mistake number 5: Underestimating referrals

The solution: It might seem hard, but growing your traffic is all about referrals. If you haven’t got Google Analytics, you should get it and navigate to Acquisition > Network Referrals. You can see your top referrals there. You’d expect to see a social media site close to the top, one of our best referrals is Pinterest (don’t underestimate it!). Your Pinterest strategy will massively grow your audience, so make sure you’re pinning content regularly as well as uploading your own content.

Great post as usual. You ticked all my boxes with the list. I’m however yet to master how to grow my referrals. Will take more interest in Pinterest.

Totally agree with these — I think it’s important to also recognize what the purpose of your blog is. Are you creating helpful content? You have to give something to your readers, even if you’re a lifestyle blog. This is something I’m still working on!
