Concealer is a makeup staple that has – let’s face it – dominated the make-up bag since highlighting and strobing got big. Long gone are the days when a light trail of product drawn neatly under the eyes sufficed. Now, if beauty vloggers are anything to go by, it’s all about triangles, lines, and dots. Everywhere.

Concealer got scary – so to break it down, here are five concealer hacks that will instantly up your make-up game.

1. Conceal blemishes

The original purpose; to cover blemishes and imperfections is the diehard benefit of his nifty product. For redness, using a green corrector concealer will cancel out the red tones and create the perfect base for your foundation. Dab the product on gently rather than rubbing or wiping for best results.

Tip: if you are using a powder foundation it is best to apply your concealer first.

2. Brighten and lift eyes

Add to the inner parts of the eyes and below the brow bone for an instant eye-lift. You can also apply to the under eye area, extending outwards. This will give you a luminous glow and add dimension to your face.

Tip: remember to use mascara and a hint of eyeshadow in a darker color on your lower lashes as concealing in this way can close the eyes in. Add to the eyelid to cheat your way to an eyeshadow primer.

3. Highlight

Apply your concealer in an upside-down triangle shape to your under-eye area to lift and brighten. Add a line down the center of your nose, upwards from the center of your forehead, to your cupid’s bow and of course at the high point of your cheekbones. Blend with a damp beauty blender on top of your foundation to add dimension and to highlight.

Tip: Highlighting under the brow bone will see you through in-between waxes.

4. Enhance your contour

Once you’ve buffed in your cheekbone contour, reach for your highlighter and ‘reverse contour’ by drawing a line underneath and above your buffed in bronze. This will sharpen the contrast and create a more precise and professional look that is super chiseled and oh so photogenic.

5. Add definition to lips and eyes

To sharpen up your make-up look; after applying your lipstick, trace the shape of your lips with concealer for a look that’s much more clean-cut and precise with no color bleeding onto your skin (plus, your lips will look fuller.) Also, you can sharpen your winged eyeliner in this way to get the perfect feline flick. Use this technique to sharpen up angles and define crisp lines.

Tip: use a flat-edged brush for a sharp and clean-cut finish.
