5 Fall Skincare Tips To Banish Seasonal Skin Problems

Summer’s over. Fall’s here. The weather cools off, leaves fall down, and our skin gets all dry and flaky again. And those pimples! Ugh! Why can’t fall weather be gentler on us? Hopefully, one day it’ll hear our prayers, but for now, if we want to banish dry skin and pimples, we need to take matters into our own hands and make a few tweaks to our skincare routine. So, here they are, our fall skincare tips to help you look gorgeous and glowing in the cold, dark months ahead.

Dry, flaky skin is in desperate need of hydration. Alcohol-free-toners are the perfect way to satisfy your skin’s thirst. We love Clinique Even Better Essence Lotion Very Dry to Dry Combination and SK-II Cellumination Mask-In Lotion. Both contain sodium hyaluronate, a humectant that attracts water from the environment into the skin. It can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water! Your skin won’t be thirsty ever again! Bonus tip: make sure the toner is still damp when you apply your serum or moisturizer. It’ll help the active ingredients better penetrate the skin, so they can work faster.

I mean moisturizer. That lightweight one we used in the summer is not good anymore. Our skin now craves more hydration than it can provide. Put it away, and opt for something richer instead, like Paula’s Choice Clinical Ultra-Rich Moisturizer or Bioderma Sensibio Rich Cream. Both do wonders for dry skin, trust me!

Did you know that breakouts are more common in the fall? Our sebaceous glands went into overdrive in the summer, producing way too much oil. Combined with the cooler autumnal air, that oil is now creating layers of dead cells on our skin, clogging our pores. The result? Breakout galore! But don’t panic. There’s an easy solution. Simply add an exfoliant, serum, or moisturizer with salicylic acid to your routine. This handy acid can get inside the pores, unclogging them from within. Bye bye breakouts! Our favorite salicylic acid-based products? Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Lotion and Philosophy Clear Days Ahead Oil-free Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment & Moisturizer.

Even those of us who aren’t cursed with frequent breakouts should exfoliate daily. Getting rid of all those dead cells makes our skin much softer and smoother, and help to improve your natural glow. The best way to exfoliate is with glycolic acid. It doubles up as a moisturizer too, and can even boost collagen production! Never be without a tube of Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Night Resurfacing Elixir or Derma E Overnight Peel With Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Your skin will thank you!

Shield your skin

Just because we won’t see the sun much in the upcoming months doesn’t mean we can forget about sunscreen. Don’t you know that those nasty UV rays can penetrate through clouds and even get reflected on snow? And then, they end up on our skin, leaving behind all sorts of damage like dark spots, and wrinkles. So, let’s be smart and wear sunscreen every single day. Kate Sommerville Daily Deflector Waterlight Broad Spectrum 50+ PA+++ Anti-Aging Sunscreen is a great option. Lightweight, it creates the perfect base for makeup.

Pimples are the worst! Treating acne is one of the most common skincare questions I get from patients, family, and friends alike. I put together a list of the treatments we dermatologists recommend here:

I am moving to significantly drier climate. It would be nice to acquire skin care processes that can curb the dry and cracked skin before it occurs. What are some of the best hand lotions these days? With dry and cracked skin, it needs to not be alcohol based.
