5 Inspiring Lessons From Gabourey Sidibe

Academy Award and Oscar Nominee Gabourey Sidibe is well known for her role as lead actress in the film Precious, as well as her starring roles in American Horror Story and Empire. She is also known for her remarkable confidence and sense of humour. Besides this, she continues to be an inspiring lady for a lot of women. Here are some of the inspiring lessons she teaches us.

Dare to believe

Gabourey famously said “I live my life, because I dare. I dare to show up when everyone else might hide their faces and hide their bodies in shame”. Through sheer hard work, and daring to believe in herself, Gabourey has made her mark in an industry that famously shames people for their looks, in particular their weight. Us girls always talk ourselves out of many opportunities because we don’t feel confident or we think that we don’t fit in, but like Gabourey, regardless of what we perceive the barriers to be, we should break through them and continue our ascents to success.

Don’t let criticism get to you

Aside from being known as the lead actress in her debut film “Precious”, Gabourey has also been described as the 300lb actress and is constantly identified as such. Despite this, Gabourey has remained confident in herself and it’s this confidence that has made her so successful in Hollywood. She reminds us that people will always have something bad to say about us, but what separates those who go on to succeed and those that don’t, is the ability to rise above the criticism and to not let it hold us back.

You won’t succeed unless you try

At the age of 24, Gabourey was a relatively unknown actress with very little experience. Yet she had the guts to go audition for a lead actress part in ‘Precious’, her debut film, a part which led her to receive nominations for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. With little experience, Gabourey could easily have thought that she had no chance at getting the part, but she tried anyway. She teaches that even when our confidence is at rock bottom, unless we push ourselves and try, then we won’t achieve what we want to achieve.

First, love yourself

Gabourey’s famous speech on self confidence continues to be an inspiration for women everywhere. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she said when she was younger, she sat down with herself, and decided that she was going to love herself regardless of what her body looked like and what other people thought of it. Like Gabourey, the first step to being accepted is to accept ourselves. Nobody is perfect, we all have flaws, but we should accept our flaws and turn them into something positive.

Let the haters fuel you

Gabourey said “I’m grateful to my bullies, because if they hadn’t made me cry, I wouldn’t be able to cry on cue now”. She is the ultimate example of someone who has let the voice of haters be her fuel. Not everyone will like us. In fact, some people will always find something wrong to point out. But instead of letting this stop us in our tracks, we should use it as fuel, to make ourselves better, and show the haters that we can still achieve great things despite their hate for us.
