5 Reasons Why People Who Don’t Need Others’ Approval Are More Likely to Be Successful

There is nothing more suffocating than needing others’ approval all the time. This is one of the things that successful people commonly understand. You make yourself a prisoner of other people when you feel the need to care about their approval and opinion.

Here are 5 reasons why people who don’t need others’ approval are more likely to be successful:

#1 – Tune out the noise

“Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.” – Steve Jobs

Tuning out the noise from other people’s opinion is really important. People always feel the need to share what their opinion on a certain situation, and if you think you need to listen to all of that, you will drive yourself crazy.

#2 – Advice is good, but not everything

One thing that successful people understand that advice is good, but always needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. Of course, when someone gives you good advice, you should take it because if might save you a lot of headache or money, but never forget to put any advice into context. Is the advice relevant to you and what does your gut say? If it isn’t relevant, trust your gut and go for whatever you believe is good.

#3 – Chasing approval is a waste of time

Feeling the need to be liked by everyone is a complete waste of time and energy. Chasing everyone’s approval will get you nowhere and the reality is, doesn’t matter what you do, not everyone will like you or approve of what you do. The only acceptance you should chase after is self-acceptance.

#4 – You can’t control someone’s opinion

Everyone has an opinion, and you have the choice to listen to it or not. You can’t always change people’s mind and that is something we all have to accept. So why would you spend time and energy to try to change people’s mind in favor of you or what you are doing when it might be a complete waste of your precious time.

#5- Needing approval kills freedom

If you feel the need to have everyone’s approval all the time, you will become their prisoner and it will kill your freedom.

I agree with so much of this. It’s nice to have the support of some people, but support and approval are different things. I seek approval so infrequently. I have the support I need from those that love me, but I rarely even seek their approval.

I would add #6 You are not a little girl anymore: a career woman knows what she wants and goes to get it. There will always be people disagreeing with you, so follow your vision. That’s enough :) .

I totally agree with this – even if we don’t recognise it 90% of the time, knowing it’s there helps you focus on you and your own talent!

I’d say this is the sort of “ah-ha!” moment we all should have in our mid-to late 20’s or early 30’s. If we’re getting married, having children, starting our own companies, we should have enough confidence within ourselves to trust our gut and intuition. Sure, it’s nice to feel validated but there comes a point where we need to be able to make decisions without other’s advice or opinion.
