We all have cravings from time to time. I’m usually craving fizzy drinks or chocolate of some kind, but there’s evidence to support the fact that your cravings actually come from needing something else.

Look, we’re not saying you can never have any of these delicious unhealthy things, just know when to swap them out to give your body what it really needs.

If you’re craving…alcohol

You need: Vitamin B2

We all like a glass of wine now and again, and even a few drinks at a party. But for perfect skin and a healthy body, you should avoid drinking on weekdays. If you find yourself craving alcohol, make yourself a yogurt, mango and spinach smoothie which is full of vitamin B2. Alcohol depletes essential vitamins, including B2, so it’s important to swap it out for something healthy!

If you’re craving…fizzy drinks

You need: Calcium

Your taste buds get addicted to the sugary sweetness of fizzy drinks. I should know, being the biggest fizzy drinks addict around, but fizzy drinks actually zap calcium from your bones. So  you need to up your calcium intake. Make yourself a deliciously frothy banana and almond milk smoothie instead.

If you’re craving…sugary foods

You need: Serotonin

Ok, we do get addicted to sugar, but if you have a serious craving for sugar at odd times (like night time) as well as insomnia, binge eating, panic attacks, anxiety, obsessive behaviors, depression or shyness that are uncharacteristic, you might have a serotonin deficiency. You can remedy this by visiting a nutritionist, but a good way to do it is to lay off the sugary foods and caffeine, do exercise and try to get more vitamin D.

If you’re craving…pasta and bread

You need: Chromium

Refined carbohydrates and sugars increase your risk for chromium deficiency. It sucks, and the more I think about it the more I want to follow a healthy diet. It’s easier said than done, though, but the next time you crave those kinds of foods, you can eat organic eggs cooked in green peppers. Green peppers contain naturally occurring chromium to help top those levels up.

If you’re craving…fatty foods

You need: Fatty acids

They say that if you crave fatty foods you’re lacking in essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6. So how do you get them? A simple seafood paella or a lovely salmon burger would absolutely help replenish those levels and sort out those cravings in an instant.
