5 Things You Should Always Do Before You Go To Bed

Your night time routine may be the last thing you think of when you come home after a long day of work or a night on the town! But your night routine is just as important as your morning routine. But the night time space can also give you a chance to prepare yourself for the next day, by physically scheduling your day or mentally preparing yourself. Here are the five things you should do before you go to bed:

1. Take off your makeup

Sleeping without washing your face leaves so much dirt, oil, and makeup on that will give you horrible acne! Make sure you wipe off all your makeup by using a cleanser to get out all the dirt and oil. Then use toners to soothe and gently cleanse the skin. Finally, find the perfect moisturizer for your skin. There are so many moisturizers that are right for your skin type, luckily, we’ve done the hard work for you. Read our article on finding the best moisturizers here.

2. Drink lemon water or green tea

There are so many health benefits to both lemon water and green teas. They can really help to boost your metabolism, antioxidants, and hydration levels! These drinks will also soothe you into a state of peace and serenity so you’ll be de-stressed when you’re finally red to hit the hay.

3. Clean your space

A clean space makes for a clean mind. Before you turn in for the night, take a few minutes to put away any clutter, wash your dishes etc. This way you’ll have an organized space to wake up to in the morning! You won’t feel like you have something looming over you, a chore for the next day. But also you won’t rush around your bedroom looking for that missing shoe! Putting out your clothes and packing your bag for the next day will also save your life too! This Marie Kondo guide will leave you with the cleanest space possible.

4. Meditate

Speaking of clear minds, take a few minutes to breathe deeply and meditate. There are apps like Headspace and Calm that guide you through easy meditations. By doing this, you’ll feel so much lighter and relaxed! Ready to sleep like a baby, and ready to take on tomorrow’s stress with a calm and steady outlook. Know you can do anything!

5. Get to bed early

A bit of an obvious one, but you need to be getting at least eight hours of sleep every night! Getting less than eight hours causes weight gain, raises cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and raises your chances of getting sick! But it also means you won’t feel like taking a nap halfway through your work day – bonus!

Meditation has been the key to restful nights! So glad to see everyone else is jumping on this serenity-inducing bandwagon!

I love these ideas! A lot of the time I’m restless going to sleep so maybe meditation is the answer, I will have to give it a go :)

isn’t the caffeine in green tea will affect your sleep? also, i heard that drinking lemon water after noon will be bad for your liver. good tips though!

I thought the same thing! those are way better pick me up drinks for in the morning! chamomile is the way to go for bed time

Your posts have become really watered down and low value – content wise. It’s a real shame because I used to be hooked on your website but now I find you post generic information that you’ve recycled from older posts. Seems like CGD is dying…

they do repeat stuff a lot! I wish they would expand to give career women investing tips or something more substantial than the same lists over and over.

Green tea is with tein, which is like caffeine and wakes you up. Wouldnt want to drink this before bed.. as well as lemon water which has a lot of vitamin c, which wakes you up as well.

  • Alexis deZayas

I’ve recently started drinking lemon water in the morning – maybe I should try it at night instead!

Hey Alexis, I wouldn’t recommend to drink it at night. As Anne pointed out, the vitamin C is more likely to wake you up. In the evening chamomile tea is a better option. :)

I’m so bad about most of the things on this list (especially going to bed early) but I’m religious about taking my washing my face before bed. It’s the best thing you can do for your skin and gives you the healthiest glow during the day when you wake up with a clean face!

As other pointed out below already, I think it’s not ideal to recommend to drink green tea or lemon water before going to bed as they are more likely to make you feel awake because of the vitamin C or theine (which has the same effect as caffeine). Herb teas are better to have before going to bed.
I love these kind of helpful lists, but also have to agree that sometimes the content seems to be taken from older posts. But I still like to scroll through it :)

Other tips that I like are drinking peppermint tea (which has the same effects as muscle relaxants and reduces bloating which is a bonus, as well it is naturally caffeine free), waking up at the same time and going to bed at the same time every day during the work week and establishing a night time routine leading up to cozying up into bed so your body begins to recognize sleep is coming soon!

    Great post!
