Sleep? What’s that? With a career and a social life who has the time even for a nap?! But sleep is not negotiable. Our body needs it. And so does our skin. Beauty sleep is not a myth. As we sleep, our body repairs itself. Our skin recovers from all the damage it suffered during the day, so that we can look our best in the morning.
But there’s more to beauty sleep than just resting our head on our pillow and closing our eyes. Here are 4 easy tricks to prepare our skin for beauty sleep and maximize its benefits:
Get rid of your Makeup. And all the dirt that has accumulated on our skin while we were out and about during the day. It doesn’t matter how tired we are, we must give our face a good cleanse. It’ll help the skin care products we’ll apply soon to penetrate deeper into our skin, so they can work their absolute best.
Did you know that our body temperature needs to cool off before we can fall asleep? Give it a helping hand by taking a cool shower. It doesn’t have to be freezing. That’d be too much! But don’t make it too hot either. I know, it’s more relaxing, but it won’t help us sleep as well.
I know I told you our skin is already doing that on its own, but that doesn’t mean we can’t give it a little help too. How? By using the right skincare products, like serums and moisturizers with retinol. This anti-aging superstar can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, boost collagen production, and even treat acne! (Source). But it makes skin more susceptible to sun damage, which is why it’s best used at night. That way, we’ll get the benefits without the troubles. Just make sure your lotions have sunk in well before laying your head on your pillow. You don’t want the cream to rub off your skin while you sleep!
Satin pillowcases are the best. As we move during sleep, the pillow causes friction, which over time, leads to wrinkles and fine lines. A satin pillowcase prevents that. It reduces friction and rubs less product off our face too. Win win.
Have a night time facial. If you can’t be bothered to do your own DIY facial, use REN’s Wake Wonderful Night Time Facial (available here and here). This transforming treatment works overnight to leave skin visibly brighter, more luminous, refined and even-toned by morning. It has three phases, exfoliating and brightening, revitalizing and boosting and finally a plumping moisturizer.
