large (6)

The competition is higher than ever! It almost feels like it doesn’t really matter anymore how many degrees or how much experience you have these days, it is almost like everyone has worked at least as hard as you did. So, how about making yourself really stand out from the crowd and landing yourself that interview that you really want.

CGD gives you some tips on how to become more employable and noticeable for your future employer.

#1 – Be social

Having a good online presence is essential these days. Even if you are not a big fan of social media, at least make sure that when a recruiter Google’s your name, you already know what they see and that you portrait a lifestyle that fits with the company.

Also, a lot of companies recruit via sites like LinkedIn, so always keep your resume up-to-date and make sure all those drunken party pics are offline.

#2 – Learn new skills

Learn at least 1 new skill per year. You need to keep progressing, keep developing yourself and try new things. Make sure you are always open to the knowledge and wisdom of others and understand that the moment you stop learning, you are dead. Extra skills make you stand out from the crowd, especially if you have skills that aren’t very common to have in your field, but are still necessary.

#3 – Be flexible

Whenever you are having an interview, make sure that you go in with a flexible mindset. When you are fixated on a certain salary or schedule without being flexible, it might cost you the job. Flexibility pays off, the company might not be able to pay you 30k a year, but maybe 27k works for them. It doesn’t mean you have to compromise so far that you aren’t happy with taking that job anymore, but be realistic, be open to suggestions and maybe you can compensate it with other benefits.

 #4 – Tailor your CV

You have 2 steps in this: firstly, improve your actual CV and secondly, tailor your CV to each specific job. Recruiters can spot a standard CV that has been sent out to everyone from miles away. Especially when a lot of people apply for the job, yours will be the first one that ends up in the bin. If you are not sure how to make your CV stand out, read CGD’S tips here!

#5 – Be positive

The key to almost everything: positivity. It can feel like an endless struggle with all the applications that you have sent out and the little responses that you got, but always be optimistic and believe that the right job for you will come. When you land yourself an interview, recruiters can smell your insecurity and desperation if you don’t stay positive, which is never a good look. SMASH! that interview! You can do it! Especially when you have read all the 1000s of article’s that CGD has on preparing for and interview, you will absolutely ace it! But most important: be you and show personality, if you and the job are meant to be, it will be.
