Important Life Lessons from Audrey Hepburn

Audrey-audrey-hepburn-27936545-476-700At CGD we’re totally obsessed with Audrey Hepburn. If you think of the word “icon” there’s few people that would match the description more than her. The actress has been an inspiration to movie fans for generations due to her eye-catching beauty and timeless style in films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady.

Not only was Audrey Hepburn stunningly beautiful, she was also very talented. She was the first actress to win a Golden Globe, an Academy Award and a BAFTA for a single performance. She was also a trained ballet dancer, and could speak numerous languages including English, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish. In her later life she devoted her time to working with UNICEF. Audrey lived her life to the full, taking each day as it comes and went out of her way to help others. These are all lessons that we should try and incorporate into our own lives on a daily basis.

1. Seize the day

“Pick the day. Enjoy it – to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come… The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present – and I don’t want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future.” (Source)

“I’ve been lucky. Opportunities don’t often come along. So, when they do, you have to grab them.” (Source)

It’s so important to seize the moment you’re in, don’t focus on the negatives and just enjoy what’s happening around you.

2. Don’t worry what anyone else thinks

“I never think of myself as an icon. What is in other people’s minds is not in my mind. I just do my thing.” (Source)

People will always try to label you, so don’t try to live up to other people’s expectations and instead do what makes you happy.

3. Step outside your comfort zone

“I was asked to act when I couldn’t act. I was asked to sing ‘Funny Face’ when I couldn’t sing, and dance with Fred Astaire when I couldn’t dance – and do all kinds of things I wasn’t prepared for. Then I tried like mad to cope with it.” (Source)

In life there will always be things you don’t think you can do, but as long as you give it a good go and push yourself like crazy you’ll be fine. Even if you fail, you should try, you might discover that you have talents you didn’t know you had.

4. Believe in yourself

“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!”

“I decided, very early on, just to accept life unconditionally; I never expected it to do anything special for me, yet I seemed to accomplish far more than I had ever hoped. Most of the time it just happened to me without my ever seeking it.” (Source)

You have to be prepared to deal with the hand you get, instead of blaming bad luck just believe in yourself and accept that good things take work.

5. Always think of other people.

“As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.” (Source)

It can be hard to be conscientious when you’re focused on your career, but thinking of other people can bring you a lot of satisfaction. Not only will you be able to say that you tried your best to avoid being selfish, but others will take notice.

6. And finally… be happy.

“I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.” (Source)

“The most important thing is to enjoy your life – to be happy – it’s all that matters.” (Source)

It’s so important to just be happy, you get one chance to make the best of your life so you should try your hardest to enjoy it. Do what makes you happy and forget the little negative things, because after all they only matter if you spend too much time thinking about them, instead collect happy moments and have fun!

    These are good advice from a great woman. But I think something is missing from the list: Embrace all feelings in life, sadness, fear, jealousy, anger, shame. Let yourself have all these feelings and explore what they tell you about yourself. It’s not human to be happy all the time. If that’s our ideal we will fail and in the worst cases get depressed. So – live and feel to the fullest!

    Wonderful article by Ailie Wallace; Audrey Hepburn was a wonderful person, actress, mother to her 2 sons, etc. “My Fair Lady” (1964, wonderfully restored for 1994 by the FAMOUS movie restorer Robert A. Harris because the film, (shot in 70mm which was/is rare, when MOST films were shot in 35mm; 70mm cameras are much bigger than 35mm cameras for making movies, as well as the 70mm film, per frame, is TWICE the size of 35mm), was NOT stored properly and almost totally lost forever) would NOT be the GREAT movie (winning 8 Oscars of its 12 nominations) that it was without Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle (whether her singing voice was dubbed or not; She had been promised that all her own singing would be done, before agreeing to do the movie.), and she was ROBBED of the Best Actress Oscar in 1965 for her performance (I like Julie Andrews as an actress and the movie “Mary Poppins” (1964) and her performance as Mary Poppins which she won Best Actress for, but her performance was NOT even close to Audrey Hepburn’s as Eliza Doolittle, and Julie Andrews has basically stated that Audrey should have won and not her.). (“My Fair Lady” (1964) is, in my opinion, one of the “TOP 5 BEST movies of ALL TIME”, and I’ve seen thousands of movies over many decades. On top of that, I very rarely like movie musicals.) (Aside: I do NOT recommend seeing “My Fair Lady”(1964) on VCR tape or Blu-ray disc, but do see it on DVD, or, with an even much better: picture quality, sound, colors, etc.; the upcoming “4K Blu-ray disc” (aka: “4K BD”), BUT, you MUST have the proper “4K Blu-ray disc” player (The current Blu-ray disc players will NOT play “4K Blu-ray discs” properly.) and the new TVs (coming out soon) that show “4K Blu-ray discs” properly with the MUCH better than the DVD: sound, picture, colors, etc.; Overall though, to SAVE money, the DVD of “My Fair Lady” (I suggest the DVD “Two-Disc Special Edition of My Fair Lady” (that came out in 2004, and includes the 1994 wonderfully restored version of the 1964 movie as well as another DVD with LOTS of interesting extra info. (www.Amazon.com sells this DVD “Two-Disc Special Edition of My Fair Lady” pretty cheaply, around $11(US dollars). (I have NO business relationship with Amazon.com in any way.)))
