A morning coffee is never really just a morning coffee, not when you take into account the one you sipped in bed, the one you had at the train station and the one you picked up in Starbucks. As tempting as it may be, it’s never a good idea to rely on a caffeine fix to give you a boost of energy; there are healthier ways of staying awake at your desk, trust me on this one!
1) Swap a Starbucks Coffee for a Green Tea
Green Tea is actually deemed more effective than coffee to increase productivity and energy levels. It still contains enough caffeine to give you a boost but not as much as a cup of coffee which could easily leave you bouncing off the walls. It’s easy to digest, helps lower cholesterol and can help with weight loss.
2) Step Outside
It may not seem like a quick fix but it is proven that being exposed to natural light can increase your alertness. Being stuck in a dim office all day won’t do you much good so be sure to go outside, get some fresh air and catch a bit of sun if possible.
3) The 3pm Snack Boost
It’s usually around 3pm that you start to get restless and reach for the snack cupboard, you want something quick and easy yet delicious and satisfying to help you stay awake. My favorite late afternoon energy boosting snack is apple slices coated in natural peanut butter, which is high in good fats and protein that will help burn body fat and give you bucket loads of energy.
4) Drink more than just water
Everyone is raving about Coconut Water and its incredible health benefits, it’s full of minerals and potassium making it the perfect mid-morning pick me up. It’s wonderfully refreshing on its own, or can be blended with bananas and strawberries for a delicious smoothie.
5) Try an Acai Bowl For Breakfast
We know chocolate flavoured cereal is sometimes the only thing worth getting up for but I promise you once you try an Acai Bowl you’ll be jumping out of bed. It’s essentially a really thick smoothie, almost like an ice cream, served in a bowl with a topping of oatmeal, fruit or whatever else you fancy. Blend 2 frozen bananas, some frozen strawberries, a glug of almond milk and around 4 tablespoons of acai powder for a simple starting recipe -then go crazy with toppings of your choice. The possibilities are endless with this delicious idea.
6) Get some iron
Kombucha is a popular pick me up tea that has a variety of purported health benefits. The Chinese called it the Immortal Health Elixir, and it is widely recognized as a good source of iron. As lethargy can be a symptom of an iron deficiency, we recommend taking all your vitamins and minerals, getting some Kombucha and seeing the doc if it doesn’t improve!

This is amazing when you’re not a huge coffee lover. It’s not necessary to drink this every day or week even, but if you have a busy day it’s great for keeping both mind and body awake and focused.
