7 Cinema Films You Absolutely Have To Buy Tickets For Right Now

There was a time when people said the cinema was dying. Netflix and other streaming services definitely threatened that, but movie makers just needed to step up their game and remind us all that visiting the cinema is an experience.

There’s nothing better than settling down to watch the best new release movies with a big pot of cinema popcorn and no phone at your side.

This weekend, why not take yourself on a date to the cinema, you won’t regret it!

1. Black Panther

What’s it about?: Black Panther is smashing all sorts of records at the moment and is definitely one to go and see. This superhero movie is a cut above the rest, with incredible costumes, actors, and a powerful message.

You don’t even need to be into sci-fi to watch this, it’s a fast-paced movie and it’ll have you hooked from the start. People are heralding this as a revolutionary movie, and it’s already breaking records. You won’t regret seeing this if you haven’t already.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 97%

2. Darkest Hour

What’s it about?: Following the dawn of World War II, Winston Churchill must deal with the threat of invasion, days into his role as Prime Minister of Britain he must decide on his ideals, and try to change the course of human history.

This is a powerful film, and an important exploration of history – and with a masterful performance from Gary Oldman (you’d never know it was him!) this is an absolute must see.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 86%

3. I, Tonya

What’s it about?: I, Tonya is based on the ‘insane true story’ of Tonya Harding. She was the first American woman to complete a triple axel during a figure skating competition and had a promising career ahead of her.

However, just a few years later, her ex-husband conspired to injure a fellow Olympic hopeful, Nancy Kerrigan. Harding’s legacy was never the same. This film, with stunning performances from Margot Robbie and Allison Janey, puts a more madcap and at times humorous spin on the events.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 90%

4. The Greatest Showman

What’s it about?: This musical is based on the legacy of P.T. Barnum, an American showman, and businessman who founded the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Hugh Jackman takes the lead in this all-singing all-dancing show, telling the story of a group of misfits who entertained America and became a worldwide sensation.

If you like feel-good musicals, this is a must-see.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 55%

5. The Shape of water

What’s it about?: From the imagination of Guillermo del Toro, this is a slightly weird fairy-tale about a lonely woman working in a government lab during the Cold War. She finds a secret classified experiment, that happens to take the shape of a creature.

Elisa rescues the creature from the facility and bonds with him. Her life will never be the same. This critically acclaimed movie is a little odd, but definitely one to watch if you need a good story. It’s highly praised for a reason.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%

6. Phantom Thread

What’s it about?: Set in the 1950’s, this film follows dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock. His glittering, glamorous life as a bachelor means he spends many an evening with women who inspire him to create dresses and further live his glitzy life.

One day, however, he meets a strong-willed woman called Alma, who throws his carefully planned life up into the air. It’s an addictive movie, for sure.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 91%

7. Loveless

What’s it about?: Nominated as best foreign film, this bleak Russian movie is worth watching. This film follows a divorcing couple who have no love left for each other, they want to leave each other at any cost, and don’t know (or care) about the effect it is having on their son.

Until, after witnessing another fight, he goes missing. The director has mentioned that the mother in this film is a metaphor for ‘mother Russia’ so it’s a really insightful portrayal of not only how our actions affect children, but what it’s like to be Russian right now.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 94%
