In the era of Instagram, there seem to be constant pressures on us Career Girls: the right wardrobe, flawless make-up, amazing titles at work, boyfriends—all the things that might get you Insta-status can lead me to having some extra-strength FOMO. Here’s why I think we should all try a little less hard to be perfect:
Because an extra hour of sleep will always beat a one-hour make-up tutorial in the morning. We all can’t be Zoella, or Tanya Burr—skip the overly complicated make-up process in the morning and feel more well-rested.
Because anyone who says “I’ve never tasted anything as good as skinny feels” has clearly never had a bacon cheeseburger.
Because Beyoncé wasn’t built in a day. Keep striving to be the best, but know it won’t be immediate—don’t feel bad if you’re not there yet. Progress takes time and effort!
Because it’s more fun to reject pressure. Sure, we might all feel stresses in our lives to get the perfect beach body or tan—but at the end of the day, it’s better to jump into the pool. Not reaching for perfection takes the pressure off, allowing for fun to happen!
Because if romantic comedies have taught me anything, it’s that people relate to flawed individuals. Embrace yourself, warts and all. When you love yourself, you’ll find other people who will, too.
It’ll keep you from focussing on the important stuff. If you’re reaching for something just outside your grasp, you’re not going to be tuned into the (imperfect) opportunities when they present themselves.
Because it’s a fruitless endeavour. Think about anyone you see as talented, or beautiful, or perfect in some way. Bet you can find some place that they’re lacking, right? Noone’s perfect; might as well be the best you, you can be.
