7 TV Shows That Are Even Better Books

There’s nothing us girls love more than coming home and vegging out in front of the TV after a long day’s work! While, it’s also great to spend your down time working on yourself, sometimes all us girls need is a couple of hours to take our minds away from our hectic schedules. Especially when you’ve got a new Netflix obsession! This week, we’re showing you your favorite books that are even better as Netflix TV shows! So rush home, jump into those jammies and pour yourself a glass of Rosé, because we’ve got your night sorted!

Gossip Girl

I was a huge fan of the paperback series by Cecily von Ziegesar, so you can definitely imagine my glee when the TV show was finally out! And it has become many girls go-to favorite ever since! I can’t think of any other TV show that skillfully mixed crazy families, flawed friendships and “the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite” into six seasons of pure drama. While the books had an edgier take, the show definitely nailed it (with partial thanks to heart throb Ed Westwick’s portrayal of Chuck Bass).

The Carrie Diaries

This take on pre-Manolo loving, Mr. Big frenzy of Carrie Bradshaw was a big surprise. Fashion inspo and boy crushes aside, the portrayal of a young Carrie Bradshaw was an inspirational take on a girl with a vision of being a writer. As compared to Sex and the City, which seemed like everything adult Carrie did was just to win the heart of a man, young Carrie showed so much drive and willpower to make all her dreams come true. Sadly, the show only lasted for two seasons which is a real bummer. If you’re ever in need of career girl inspiration, watch it. Her drive alone will ignite your desire to reach your dreams (and update your wardrobe).

Sherlock

This classic British literature definitely made fans out of many people, but thanks to Benedict Cumberbatch and the shows seamless story line and iconic dialogues, Sherlock has become a phenomena. Even the die-hard fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle won’t roll their eyes at this BBC adaptation! We definitely recommend this for when you need a break in your Netflix binge routine and you might find your next addiction!

Game of Thrones

This series definitely created a cult following thanks to its realistic storytelling and its ever expanding cast of schemers. Of course, this show is not for the faint of heart but for fantasy and drama junkies. This show will definitely hit the spot for you. Martin’s strategy in making his fans wait while he finishes the books, which adds to the fun of waiting for new episodes! Let the games begin!

The Handmaids Tale

Oh my god. The Handmaid’s Tale certainly brings the drama. Set in the future, it’s about a group of women who are used to create children for wealthier families. They are the handmaids, and their names symbolize the men they are part ‘of’. For example, the protagonist Offred. It’s set in America and follows Offred as she tries to find her daughter, and resist the charm of her household’s driver Nick, who is known to be a spy. The book will blow you away, and if you watch the TV show, the author, Margaret Atwood has answered some huge questions, making this show almost like a sequel to the book!

Big Little Lies

Two things: an A-list cast (who doesn’t love Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman?) and a mysterious murder. Based on Liane Moriarty’s book, the show is about a group of suburban moms who find that they are somehow connected to a murder. Totally gripping and induced with drama. I loved the book and the series does it justice!

Vampire Diaries

The TV incarnation of L.J. Smith’s book rose to great popularity what with the suspenseful story line and the hot on-screen relationships. If you enjoy teen drama and anticipation that’ll make you binge watch the whole night, then this might be for you. It is probably my favorite series ever with plot lines that you won’t be able to anticipate! And as the series goes on you can’t believe that it gets better and better!

  1. What a smart idea for a blog post! I definitely need to make more time in my life for reading. I’m usually more of a non-fiction gal, but I do love a good fiction mystery! Let me know if you have any non-fiction favorites.

  2. A handmaid’s tale sounds so interesting. I can’t believe I’ve never come across the book or the series. Thanks for the recommendation!

  4. I far preferred the book to program of Big Little Lies, though thought was well acted, it just didn’t hook me as book did. I didn’t even know some of these were books before series, like Game of Thrones or Gossip Girl!
