Do you religiously apply sunscreen every day and then binge on sweets? Splurge on that expensive moisturizer loved by so many celebs and then enjoy one drink too many? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re sabotaging all your skin care efforts. What we put into our bodies is much more important than what we put on our skin.

If our diet isn’t healthy, our skin won’t be. Ever. So, what shouldn’t we put into our bodies? Here are the 7 worst diet mistakes that destroy your skin:

1.Binging on sugar

It feels so good to reach for biscuits or ice cream at the end of a bad day, doesn’t it? But we know we’re gonna regret it later. Sugar makes us fatter. And older too. It attacks, and damages, collagen and elastin through a process called glycation. As a result, skin loses elasticity and gains wrinkles. Next time you’re craving a slice of cake, opt for a peach or apple instead. The sugar in fruit is much healthier for you and your skin.

2. Eating too many high GI carbs

You know what else damages collagen and elastin? Foods with a high glycemic index, such as white bread, white rice, and pasta. They cause a rapid spike in blood sugar, which leads to inflammation, and loss of firmness and elasticity. But don’t worry. You don’t need to give up your daily bread. Just switch to whole grains, and your skin will be fine.

3. Staying away from veggies

I know, I know, a salad isn’t as appealing as a steak. But you know what’s even less appealing? Wrinkles. Veggies (and fruits too) are packed with powerful free-radical-fighting antioxidants that help skin stay younger for longer. Gobble them up, and you’ll never show off your age.

4. Not getting enough fat

The healthy kind, I mean. Yes, they exist. They’re called omega-3 and are found in fish and nuts. Their job is to ensure that cell membranes work well and absorb all the nutrients and vitamins our body and skin need. Anyone fancies some salmon now?

5. Getting drunk

A bit of alcohol is ok. A lot isn’t. Alcohol dehydrates skin, leaving it dry, thirsty, and prone to wrinkles. Treat yourself to a much-deserved glass of wine at dinner, and drink plenty of water during the rest of the day. Your skin will look much plumper and smoother!

6. Beware of sugary drinks

We already know how much sugar is bad for skin. But sugar isn’t just in candy or biscuits. It’s in sodas too, and many other sugary drinks we gobble down every day in lieu of good old plain water. If you want to make sure those wrinkles don’t appear anytime soon, switch back. I know water is boring, but your skin loves it. It’s so hydrating! Try squeezing some fruit into your plain old water for a healthy boost.

7. Skipping meals

Skipping meals isn’t smart. It deprives your skin of the important nutrients it needs to look and feel its best. If you refuse to eat them, you can’t complain it looks so dry and lifeless. Feed it well, and it’ll bloom.

  3. Thanks for the tips!

I find it difficult to avoid carbs though because I do eat a small bowl of white rice almost everyday for dinner. Sometimes we do have brown rice/red rice, but those are the exceptions.

    Anyway, great post!

  4. Great tips! I drink more water than anything else (I never drink soda) and my skin looks so good. I should probably stock up on fruits instead of cookies now… Thanks for the reminder! :)

  5. Mei, I love white rice too. A small amount won’t do much harm. It’s when you eat too much too often that problems start. Try substituting it with brown rice more often, and see how it goes.
