8 Things We All Secretly Do In Our Lunch Breaks

Staring at a screen, organising dressing rooms, talking to customers, it can get exhausting. Thank goodness for breaks, we finally get to shake off the lethargy of waking up early and have a little bit of me-time. Here are eight things we all do in our work breaks.

#1 Browse, browse, browse

We can’t help it, even if we’ve been staring at a screen all day we still need to have a look on Facebook and Pinterest, or read our favourite blogs. Having a few moments to connect with your world can make you feel a little bit happier in the long run, plus you can open WhatsApp on your phone and have a good old moan with your friends.

#2 Snack

Sitting at a desk can lead to snacking, especially if you’re lucky enough to get freebies sent to your office. But once you have a break, even if it’s not quite lunchtime, you’re suddenly desperately hungry. You know you need to go and get a good seat at the canteen, or hit the restaurants before the lunchtime rush, so it’s time to pack your bag and rush off to stuff your face before you have to be back in an hour.

#3 Keep up with the office gossip

Okay, some of us don’t like to refer to it as ‘gossip’, but there’s always something going on in the office that your co-workers are whispering about. Even if you don’t engage with it, you can’t help but open your ears a little bit. Knowing who’s dating who and who hates who is kind of interesting, you have to admit.

#4 Make small changes

When everybody else is at lunch you can finally have the office exactly as you’d like it to be, you can change the station of the office radio without anyone yelling at you and you can colour co-ordinate the skirts on the rack without anyone thumbing through them, you are the master of the work place now!

#5 Check those mirrors

You have to do a detour via the bathroom to check your outfit in the mirror, of course. Whether you’re touching up your with Kat Von D’s everlasting liquid lipstick or straightening out that scruffy shirt, we all like to know for sure we don’t have anything in our teeth before we strut back into the office.

#6 Hide

Sometimes you just want some ‘me-time’, whether you duck out the doors and stand in the fresh air or find yourself standing expectantly by the photo copier, avoidance is healthy in small doses. If you just can’t stomach being part of the group today, or you know you just need to call your best friend and moan, hiding is perfectly normal. Just make sure you don’t avoid socialising in the office too much.

#7 Shop

What better way to make yourself feel better than to put some treats in your basket from Miss Guided, if you’ve had a particularly stressful day you know you deserve those shoes, and you can even reserve things to pick up on your way home from work, so the reward can come instantly!

#8 Watch the clock

It’s true, at lunchtime an hour seems like two seconds, but once you’re back at work you’re staring at the clock waiting and the minutes are rolling by slower than ever. Even if you’re in love with your job, you still know the joy of the clock rolling onto home time. Especially on a Friday!

What do you get up to on your work breaks? Let us know in the comments below.

Great post! I like to get out of the office on my lunch hour, so if it’s not raining too hard outside (I live in Portland, OR), I’ll go for a stroll. It’s nice to stretch my legs and get some fresh air.
