Seven Self-Care Tips For Staying Home

When you’re staying at home it’s easy to lose your sense of balance. Your work life can take over your personal life, and things can feel more difficult than they could at the office. It’s normal to feel like you’ve lost your sense of routine, so with that in mind, we thought we’d round up the best self-care tips for staying home because it’s always a good time to invest in yourself and boost your mood.

1. Read a good book

If you like romance, try The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, if you’re a fan of non-fiction definitely pick up Mindf*ck by Christopher Wylie. If you like Crime thrillers try The Better Liar by Tanen Jones. Why not try picking up a book you would not ordinarily have read. You might be surprised. We’ve got a pretty good list of books you can read here, in case you need more suggestions.

2. Start a feel-good playlist

The power of music knows no bounds. Right now I’m listening to the Power Ballads playlist on Spotify – and feeling good about it too. There’s no better feeling than belting out Total Eclipse of the Heart as loud as you can.

3. Focus on the positives

With all the days blurring into one it can be hard to take note of what you’ve done that’s actually boosted your mood and made you feel good. Finding the magic in every day will help alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety, make you feel more positive and help boost your mental strength so that you can feel calm and rested on even the most stressful of days. Why not start a gratitude journal? Not only will it help you remember all the good things in life, it’ll give you a memory book to look back on, filled with happy memories and moments.

4. Get into the habit of writing

From a journal to fiction, writing is a great habit that will boost your mood and make you feel good, it’s a modern form of mindfulness, allowing you to switch off and giving you something physical to look back on.

Decide to write for 30 minutes a day and stick to it, it’s a habit that will change your life. Some people have volumes and volumes of journals to look back on, making an amazing memento of a life well lived!

5. Upgrade your average bath or shower

Add a few drops of essential oil to a bath or shower, light a candle, and get a chill playlist on, then decide what ‘treatment’ you’re going to sign yourself up for at the spa you designed. Is it going to be a face mask?

A body scrub? A hair treatment? Make this an appointment with yourself that you just can’t miss.

6. Do something fun with your friends

Host a Zoom escape room or, if you can, get outside with your six chosen friends. If you’re still at home, there are plenty of ways to stay social. I recently did a Netflix Party with my friends and we watched The Haunting Of Hill house together. It was great to diffuse those scary moments with a group chat and all watch it together.

7. Work out more often

Try to make an effort to move more, if you can go for a walk, if not clear some space and follow an at-home workout plan. There are so many on YouTube right now, or you can sign up for a program like BodyBoss. You can even use the Fit planner to track your workouts, habits, and get fit for life, not just for lockdown.
