“I swear it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt…”
It’s very rare these days to see a celeb on the TV or on the red carpet sans makeup – most of the time we simply just hear how it took them, or their personal stylists, three hours or more to complete the look.
This is why women all over are giving respect to the incredibly talented Alicia Keys for deciding to go barefaced, permanently. Millions of viewers tuned into Sunday’s one-hour preview of “The Voice,” Season 11 – noticing that Alicia was going au naturel on network television.
But this isn’t the first time she’s decided to be in the public eye wearing nothing on her face other than her freckles. She actually revealed earlier in May that she made the choice to ditch cosmetics. She told Lenny Letter how uncovering just how much she censored scared her.
“Who was I anyway? Did I even know HOW to be brutally honest anymore? Who I wanted to be? I didn’t know the answers exactly, but I desperately wanted to.”
The 35-year-old said it became unhealthy and every time she left the house she would be worried if she didn’t put on makeup. Scarily, the insecurities all start from such a young age – we all get to a point in our lives (especially girls) where we try to be perfect.
Alicia received the worldwide support of women from all corners of the globe when the artwork for her new song “In Common” was released. At first, she was very anxious about the photo shoot as she had just left the gym in a sweaty mess, and was just wearing a headscarf under a baseball cap – with no makeup.
“I swear it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt.” She added.
Women worldwide began to show their support by using #nomakeup and posting makeup-free selfies.
“I hope to God it’s a revolution. ‘Cause I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”
This issue is one that we all resonate with. Maybe if more celebrities supported going makeup free in the public eye (on TV!) it would give girls from a young age the confidence to be able to show all their imperfections with pride and feel beautiful with or without makeup.
