One of the most iconic stars of our time comes in the form of Italian beauty Sophia Loren, and she isn’t short of a few inspiring life lessons either. Her feline eyes, high cheekbones, full pout and curvaceous figure helped make a name for herself as one of the most beautiful women on the silver screen. She starred in several critically acclaimed films and become the first person to win an Academy Award for a foreign language performance for her role in Two Women. Most recently, Loren has been honoured with her very own lipstick shade by Dolce and Gabbana, entitled ‘Sophia Loren No1’ to mark her 81st birthday. Here at CGD, we’ve rounded up some of her most memorable life lessons that make her one of the most inspiring career women of her generation.
“Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical.”
There are too many people who are quick to judge themselves based on their imperfections when perfection itself is impossible to achieve. It is a person’s flaws that make them unique and beautiful so instead of trying to change it, embrace it and be happy within yourself! If you don’t love your imperfections, then someone else will and like Loren said, true beauty comes from within and if you’re beautiful on the inside, then it’ll reflect on the outside.
“It’s a mistake to think that once you’re done with school you need never learn anything new.”
Don’t be fooled into making the mistake of thinking once you’ve left school, college or university that you’ve finished with your education. There’s so much you can learn every single day, and continuing to broaden your knowledge will only enhance your potential and better you as a person.
“Spaghetti can be eaten most successfully if you inhale it like a vacuum cleaner.”
Life’s too short to count every single calorie so if you want to indulge in your favourite food, then do it. Don’t waste your time denying yourself of things that are going to make you happy.
“Always be surrounded by people that you like, people who have a nice conversation. There are so many positive things to think about.”
As the famous writer, Edna Buchanan said “Friends are the family we choose for ourselves”, which is why the type of friend you surround yourself with is so important. If you choose friends who are negative or bitchy, then you will only bring yourself down and stop yourself from being truly happy. Your best friends should be there for you no matter what, whether you need a shoulder to cry on or a spontaneous night out, your friends are valuable to keep you happy and grounded.
“It’s better to explore life and make mistakes than to play it safe. Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life.”
Making mistakes does not equal failure instead it is how we learn from these mistakes and persevere that makes us stronger as individuals. The setbacks are the things that drive us to carry on, do better and achieve more. In the end, the harder you’ve fought for something, the sweeter the victory will be.
“I don’t understand people who hide from their past. Everything you live through helps to make you the person you are now.”
Never be ashamed of your past because your past is exactly what has defined you and shaped you into the person you are today. Whether your past was being bullied at school, being cheated on by an ex, or being stuck in a job you hated for years, look back at those times and think of how much you have achieved since then. However big or small the struggles were in your past, they’ve made you into the strongest version of yourself, and that’s something you should always be proud of.
