The Best Way To Stay In Shape When You Don’t Have Access To A Gym

Not having access to a gym is a great excuse not to workout, but it actually doesn’t matter what tools you have. You can run, kick, jump, skip and dance way to being in shape, but it’s always easier said than done. So over the holidays if you don’t have access to a gym, or if you want to get in shape in a couple of weeks – you can join me, especially after Thanksgiving! I’ll be trying to be healthier before my gigantic Christmas dinner and start the New Year off right.

1. Become an early riser

Many successful people swear by getting up in the early hours of the morning and working out, but you can just as easily use that time to meditate. You’ll see a remarkable difference in your body if you tailor your sleep routine to get up earlier and go for a walk or do some gentle yoga instead of sleeping right up until your alarm and then catching a bus.

2. Stand at your desk for a while

One of the things that really annoys me is how long I’m sitting down for. Long days at the office mean I’ve always got my bum parked on a chair, even on the way home I find myself sitting. Every couple of hours I’m going to turn my desk into a standing desk.

3. Use this app to keep your eating in check

I was drinking fizzy drinks at 9am and bringing so many snacks with me wherever I went, I realized, with all the stress coming up, I needed to be more accountable. So I downloaded Lifesum, which is slowly changing my whole outlook on healthy eating (and kinda changing my life over here!)

I log how much water I drink, and generally eat better. It also comes with recipes and workout plans that look too easy to be true. I’m blocking out my after work time to try some of them. I’ve chosen a plan to follow for the next few months to see if I can reach my goal by January, and I check in with it daily to see if I’m over my recommended limit or on track.

4. Be active

You still need to be active, even if you’re using an app – fitting activity into my seriously crazy life is really difficult. We’re loving this YouTube workout video in the office at the moment. With over eight million views, what’s so good about it is that it can be done by anyone at any activity level, and actually works. It’s not too hard but you can feel the burn! Best thing: you can do it from any room in your house!

Get out and walk. It’s free and requires no equipment. Running is even better, but you need clothes and shoes. I find that over the holidays, I have a hard time exercising because I’m in somebody else’s home, and there is no space to work out, not even a spot of floor for doing sit-ups. Plus everybody else sleeps until 2 in the afternoon and they have a fit if I so much as flush the toilet. So I get the heck outta there and go for a big hike.

Oh God, this post reminds me I really need to get on with waking early. I mean, it’s currently 5AM where I live and I’m still up reading blogs even though I have to meet a friend at 10AM tomorrow!

This was really a good timing. I just finished exercising this afternoon and I hope I will continue this and turn it into a lifestyle. Hehe! Wish me luck, girls! ;)
