British Vogue Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Shulman – 5 Career Tips For Starters

DSC_0454She is living the dream, has access to every fashion event worldwide and is a power woman by heart: Vogue editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman. The British beauty started her fashion journalism career at The Tatler while she was working for the Sunday Telegraph, Vogue, and GQ, where she later became an editor.

While some people thought she was not experienced enough when she got the position of editor-in-chief at Vogue and others thought she did not look like an editor-in-chief for Vogue, her hard work and results proved them wrong. Under her lead, the British Vogue saw their monthly readers rise to over a million and she uses her platform to raise critical issues in the fashion industry. At the beginning of her career she stated that there would never be a diet or plastic surgery in Vogue, and she has spoken publicly about the fact that anorexia is still a huge problem in the fashion world, criticizing the fact that the sample sizes were shrinking and saying that they are ‘miniscule’ samples that only can be worn by models with ‘jutting bones’.

This power woman gave fashion career tips during the Vogue Festival in 2014, but these tips are not just fashion related and can be used by any career girl!

#1 – Take responsibility

”Don’t let yourself become a victim. It is easy to blame others at work for what you are not happy about or not achieving.”

#2 – Network

”Make friends with as many people as you can, both senior and junior to you, and don’t take sides if possible.”

#3 – Get it done!

”It is more important to get a thing done one way or another than to aim for perfection and do nothing.”

#4 – Act a part

”Good manners will get you a long way.”

#5 – Be patient

”Be prepared to do the most basic tasks cheerfully when you start out and accept that it takes time to move on to the next step.”

  1. Taking responsibility is something I’ve definitely learnt, you can’t play victim and have to learn from mistakes!
