How Charlotte Tilbury Built Her Makeup Empire

Charlotte Tilbury believes that make-up has a very empowering effect over women and her ethos when it comes to make-up is “Give a woman the right make-up and she can conquer the world”. Her flawless modern look is popular with everyone from Kate Moss to Kim Kardashian, and she’s a household name when it comes to beauty products.

“My father is a painter and my mother is equally creative so, growing up in Ibiza, I was surrounded by artists, writers, musicians, and actors. I knew that I would do something creative too but it was when I met the inspirational makeup artist Mary Greenwell that I decided to train at the Glauca Rossi School of Makeup. As a young makeup artist, I was determined and persistent and built my network of professional peers – photographers, models, and stylists – many of whom I still work with today.”

She realized that there was no difference between celebrities and real women, all women have the same issues, whether that be tired skin or spots, or just a bad skin day!

“I had to work hard for my first break into the industry—I would call the magazines and meet as many people as possible to be given an opportunity. It was tough, but I never gave up—it was a real life lesson. To make it in this industry, you have to have an incredible work ethic, self-belief and determination.” She told Byrdie. Getting her big break in the 90’s working with Mario Testino and photographers Mert and Marcus and creating that glossy, photoshopped look with makeup that everyone is a fan of today!

Finally, to keep her products at the forefront of everyone’s imagination, she works hard to cultivate her brand image, with everything from packaging to her social media channels representing the look of her makeup line. She also uses YouTube to share tips and tricks with her followers and is always working on new innovative products. Let’s face it, there’s a reason you associate Charlotte with that glamorous, flawless look.

It’s a look we all want this party season.
