There is an ongoing debate surrounding the topic of wearing makeup to the gym. Claims of blocked pores and the effects of both makeup and sweat sitting on the surface of the skin boost the scare factor, but is it really that bad for your skin?
The simple answer is yes. But, as a (semi) regular gym goer myself, I can’t say I ever like to turn up barefaced. Going to the gym can make you feel self-conscious enough without having to worry how red you are or tired you look.
The braver party would call this vein or stupid, but while I don’t slap on a full face of makeup pre-workout, there are a few basics that help me feel more comfortable. However, there definitely are a few rules that need to be followed, to avoid all of the pore blocking/spot causing consequences. Read on for my gym approved makeup routine – just enough to boost your confidence, without looking overdone or wrecking your skin.
Should you wear a base?
If you feel comfortable skipping it – do. Your skin is expelling as you work out and this is where your base can find its way into your pores.
If like me, you feel you need a little coverage, then look for a lightweight, tinted formula with included skincare benefits. I like to use a mineral-based formula like the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream. It offers light/medium, radiant coverage without causing spots and has a ton of skincare benefits too!
Panda eyes, anybody?
As far as eyes and lips go, I always keep it minimal. You don’t want to be that girl seen in the gym with a full smoky eye/matte lip combo.
I find a sweep of mascara and maybe a bit of liner is enough to make me look awake enough to face the world. Personal trainers swear by a lick of waterproof eyeliner for that extra professional face at the gym.
Don’t bring your lip liner…
I like to work out in the mornings, so using a hydrating formula with a hint of colour helps me remember to moisturize my lips in the morning. Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment feels really hydrating, comes in a huge range of pretty shades and packs in SPF 15 too.
Always cleanse!
I always make sure to remove every trace of makeup post workout, and never reapply on top! Your pores enlarge when you’re hot, so I try to cleanse my skin while I’m still warm, before my pores close trapping the makeup inside.
A micellar water is my favourite way to remove makeup as most wipes can be stripping, but whipping out the micellar water and cotton pads is hardly the most convenient solution. I love Bioderma’s Micellar Wipes as a convenient mixture between the two!
