So, I must confess, I’m a major beauty spender! Considering that the average American woman will spend $300,000 on her face alone in her life, it seems that I’m not the only one! But in the spirit of the new year, I’ve decided to do a big clearout, analyze all the things I didn’t actually use and find out what I’ve been spending my money on. After my clearout, I’ve been left with two full boxes of beauty products. When in reality, the products I use daily fit all in one bag!
So, what am I spending my money on and is it worth it? I’ve rounded up my spends, and the best products I tried last year. Now it’s time for you to do the same.
$138 Spent On Primers:
I don’t think my yearly spends were too over the top. I’m quite good with makeup and try not to overdo it, plus I know a large pea drop of a primer is all I need for one day. I try to need a refill every three months.
Urban Decay Self-Adjusting Complexion Primer available here
Verdict: So, I bought this primer when I had run out and was in desperate need for one. I had heard a lot about Urban Decay and I was happy to give it a go. The primer itself is good – I tend to prefer the silky, smooth primers that glide across your face easily and this primer does exactly that. It did a really good job of holding my makeup in place, but I don’t feel like it was the exact fit for me, maybe because I had chosen the wrong variety as the brand have many more primers that each do different things.
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer available here
Verdict: I really loved this product and thought it was one of the best primers I’ve ever tried. It has that smooth application that I love and really mattifies pores. Whenever my skin felt a little dry I felt like the product did a good job at making it silky smooth and hydrated, which can be a hard task to find a product that does this. I really loved it and would buy it again!
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer available here
Verdict: Everything changed for me at the end of the year when I bought the Fenty primer! At first, I thought I wouldn’t like it at all. The primer applies more like a moisturizer than it does a primer and seeing that I usually prefer the silky ones I thought I was going to be disappointed. But, I find that it’s really good and really helps my makeup stay on for longer. I feel like the primer works best with the Fenty foundation and that they complement each other for the best look. And seeing as this is the cheapest of the bunch it will be my go-to primer from now on!
$216 Spent On Foundations:
For me, foundation is something I have to wear daily. And I can spend a lot of money trying to get it right. I still think my expenses are quite good for the entire year, I spent some time trying out different things. I’ve tried out a lot of foundations and fell in love with two this year. But as it can be quite costly, I was brave enough to try the no-foundation trend and switch to a tinted moisturizer on the days my skin wasn’t being too terrible! This really helped me not go through bottles and bottles of foundations by just simply alternating!
Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF 15 available here
Verdict: When it comes to my foundation I’m very picky. I started the year with the Bobbi Brown, which I bought in an airport in a desperate bid for some new foundation for my holidays. I usually tend to prefer my foundation to be very liquidy so it’s easily spread. But this foundation I found was very thick and was hard to pull across my face. I think it’s more suited to girls who prefer a heavier coverage for a mask-like finish.
Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Youth-Boosting Perfect Skin Foundation available here
Verdict: This is the foundation of my dreams! When I first stumbled across it I really believed that I had found the perfect foundation for life. I even made my colleagues and friends buy it so they could experience how amazing it was. And it really is. It’s a liquid foundation (which I love) and gives you a very natural, flawless coverage. Would buy it a million times!
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation available here
Verdict: So, I thought Charlotte Tilbury was my favorite foundation ever and it was until I tried the Fenty last month. And I have never had a foundation that literally felt like a second-skin before. Rihanna has really stepped up her game, launching 40 shades and providing a foundation that’s cheaper than most and includes 2 more MLS than any other on the market. Definitely my new favorite!
Laura Mercier Tinted Foundation available here
Verdict: I love this product. It can literally replace my foundation! Those days where you don’t really feel like doing your makeup or even wearing it is made possible with this product! It gives you a really nice, light coverage that promotes natural beauty that’s boosted with a glow! It’s even more perfect in the summertime, as it’s SPF protected and perfect for those hot days!
$176 Spent On Eyebrow pencils:
Over the years I’ve probably bought more eyebrow products than I care to remember! Ever since we realized that we have to have perfect brows we’ve gone in search of the products that can really do it! And as it’s something I can’t leave the house without I’ve spent a little too much on brow products this year, but hey, it’s definitely needed!
Benefit Brow Zings Tame & Shape Kit available here
Verdict: This product is very good and I was very happy with it until I found other products in the collection that did somewhat of a better job in terms of what I preferred. On the left side, you can use the darker gel to tame your brows and create shape. The right side is for filling in. I really liked the product, but it’s not so brilliant when you’re having a bad eyebrow day.
Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil Easy Shape & Fill Pencil available here
Verdict: I love, love, love this product. The perfect eyebrow applicator allows you to take control of your eyebrows and draw them on as light or as heavy as you please. You can buy the thin applicator or the thicker one, which allows you to literally draw on hair easily!
Benefit Cosmetics 3D BROWtones Instant Color Highlights available here
Verdict: I’ve literally used three of these since I first bought one. And I personally love it. It’s perfect for applying brows for a natural filled in look. It builds on the brows you already have – so if you just need simple filling in for definition then this product is definitely one for you. It’s my favorite and I will use it forever! I can literally fill in my brows in minutes!
$155 Spent On Highlighters:
Seeing as you only need a sprinkle of highlight (if it’s a really good one) they can last you quite a long time. I tend to gravitate to products that give me more of a natural glow rather than an in your face sort of shine! I would say I spend a lot on these products just because I love trying new ones.
Filmstar Bronze & Glow Face Sculpt Highlight available here
Verdict: If you’re looking for a subtle glow then I have to say that this highlighter is the best. The left side is for sculpting, where you can use the bronzer on your cheekbones to contour and then use the right side for the highlight, which should be applied on the highest point of your cheeks. And it really works great! Everybody always comments on it!
Urban Decay Afterglow Highlighter Palette available here
Verdict: I think this product is really great. When I’m not using the Charlotte Tilbury I like to switch between highlighters depending on my mood. And this literal palette is perfect for changing up your glow to how you feel. And they’re really great!
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter available here
Verdict: I prefer this highlighter in comparison to the Match Stick Trio. I feel that it’s more powerful and more visible – and would certainly buy this over it every time. I really love this product and I have never felt more highlighted or on point!
$106 Spent On Eyeshadows:
I don’t use eyeshadows every day – in work I tend to not go for anything over the top and concentrate on neutral colors. So, if I am to use an eyeshadow it has to be nudes and browns. So, in terms of spending money on eyeshadow, I’ve been quite good – I’ve found two that I really love, and only really need.
Charlotte Tilbury ‘Luxury Palette’ Colour-Coded Eyeshadow Palette available here
Verdict: I don’t use eyeshadow very often, but this product makes me use it more. I love the colors and how they look on. I’ve never felt more confident or as good at applying makeup! It’s really easy and amazing quality!
MAC Nordstrom Now Eyeshadow Palette available here
Verdict: MAC never disappoint and there’s a reason their palettes are so popular. I love this palette because of the neutral shades included, which means I can incorporate more daily. It lasts ages and it’s really good quality!
$102.50 Spent On Mascaras:
TOO FACED Better Than Sex Mascara available here
Verdict: If you want big, fat, full lashes then this is the product for you. I cannot rate it enough and it is the best mascara I’ve ever tried. I do equally love the Dior mascara, but I find this one is exactly the same, if not better at a much cheaper price. They last a good length of time too, I’ve only gone through two of these in the last year.
Lancome Hypnose Drama available here
Verdict: This was my go-to favorite for years. Lancome has an amazing set of mascaras and this one is one of my favorites! It will give you those long lashes that are instantly curled by the shape of the brush! It doesn’t run out quickly and it feels like a luxury product! Definitely a good buy if you want long, long lashes!
Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes 5 Star Mascara available here
Verdict: So, I’ve tried out Charlotte Tilbury’s mascara in the past and it didn’t really work for me. But this mascara is either a revamped version or a new one, so I thought full fat lashes? I could do with that! And I must say, I’m the queen of lashes, so I know what mascara is good for long, curly, perfect lashes and this is just not the one for me. It’s really good for volume, but I need to use it with another mascara to get lashes I’m happy with. But it does give you fuller, fatter lashes but not so good for length!
TOTAL YEARLY SPEND = $893.50
+ REFILLS = $1000
I estimate that around $1000 was spent on makeup and buying refills of my favorites. And that’s me being frugal. I haven’t included the lipsticks I bought because I know that this article wouldn’t be able to handle how many I have. I must have four of the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk (because it’s amazing)!
But that doesn’t even take into consideration all the other products I use from haircare, skincare and excessive pampering products. There’s the FOREO I use every day, which I pair with the Sunday Riley Good Genes All in One Lactic Acid Treatment that completes my evening cleansing routine. And for my haircare? It’s all about Morroconoil Oil – anything and everything they sell because Argan oil is a miracle ingredient! Not forgetting the OUAI Wave Spray I use on occasion for the perfect beach waves! So with my additional extras, I estimate $2000 for the year – and I think that’s quite generous.
Total spend over 12 months = $2000
