Think you’ve nailed the art of hair washing? It’s simple right, just douse yourself in water and lather up with shampoo? Have you ever wondered, though, why your hair isn’t as healthy as you want it to be? Or why it doesn’t do what you want it to once it’s dry?
Well, the answer to all your problems could be banishing shampoo. It’s an outrageous idea, but all over the world, people are swearing by it.
Co-washing is everywhere at the moment. It reportedly transforms lives by improving the condition of your hair. Yet again another shampoo-free trend is taking over.
We spoke to Mark Leeson, the Global Creative Ambassador of Goldwell, about the benefits of co-washing to make sure you have everything you need to know before you ditch the shampoo in the search for your healthiest hair yet!
Mark says: “Co-washing’ is just a short term for ‘condition washing’, meaning there is no need to use the traditional shampoo and conditioner method. Lathering shampoos often contain harsh ingredients that strip the hair of its natural oils and nutrients, as well as your colour. We then apply conditioner to add that moisture back into the hair after this cleanse process. Cleansing conditioners, however, are made with gentle formulas that clean, hydrate and condition the hair in just one easy application.”
1. Be picky with your products
If you attempt this technique with your regular conditioner, chances are you will end up with limp, greasy locks. So when choosing your cleansing conditioner, look for one that is low in silicones. Check the ingredients label for anything ending in cone. With continuous use, silicones build up in the hair, requiring a harsher shampoo to remove them.
For normal or colored hair:
Goldwell Kerasilk Color Cleansing Conditioner (available 18th July) is a good choice. It contains Keratin, Silk and Tamanu Oil so will cleanse your hair while actively fighting color fade. It’s light-weight so nobody will be able to tell you’re cutting out shampoo, and will boost the vibrancy of your hair even if you don’t dye it.
Mark says: “This revolutionary Cleansing Conditioner applies the same science of skincare to your hair by effective cleansing with moisturising elements to rejuvenate, refresh and revitalise! It’s so simple to use too, just as a normal shampoo conditioner combo – apply to wet hair, massage, rinse, and style.’’
For curly hair:
Pick up a cleansing conditioner that’s designed especially for your bountiful curls. DevaCurl No-Poo has peppermint and grapeseed oil for stimulating the scalp, hydrating and cleansing without stripping any weight, texture or oils from your hair.
For fine hair:
Fine hair is easily weighed down by cleansing conditioners, so try Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner For Fine Hair. It has a weightless texture and contains low foam and low shampoo. It also has no silicones, sulfates or parabens so it’s great for keeping the bounce in your fine hair.
For textured hair:
Keep your texture while keeping your hair healthy with Mizani Tru Textures Cleansing Cream Curl Wash Conditioner although it says ‘curl wash’ it’s packed full of natural ingredients that will gently remove everything you use to style your textured hair, smells amazing and is gentle enough to cleanse and protect your scalp.
2. Do a detox
Once a week or fortnight, detox your scalp using a clarifying shampoo. Skipping this step can lead to an itchy scalp, or a build up in the hair, weighing it down and making it seem limp or dirty. Look for a sulphate-free formula that is cleansing yet gentle. We love dpHUE’s Clarifying Shampoo and Bumble and Bumble’s Sunday Shampoo. They will rid the hair of any product build up.
3. Be kinder to your scalp
Some girls in the office swear by co-washing, and haven’t washed their hair with shampoo in years. So it’s all about preference. It can bring hydration to most hair types and is great for coarse, curly hair. You need to find your favorite products, though.
Remember to care for your scalp skin the same way you would your face. Protect it from the sun and allow your hair to have a nourishing treatment sometimes. Nioxin Night Density Repair will protect it from UV and pollution at night time and it smells amazing!
