The Handbag Staple That’s Cooler Than You Think

I’m talking, of course, about the humble lipstick. Every girl owns one, whether in chubby sticks of peach or gold blocks of luxurious velvet. We love them. From matte to liquid, from silky to sheer. And as today is National Lipstick Day (damn right there’s a day for this!) we’re celebrating by buying ourselves some new lippies and figuring out what’s so special about lipstick anyway.

The history of lipstick

Ancient Sumerian men and women were possibly the first to invent and wear lipstick, about 5,000 years ago. Which is pretty amazing, lipstick has been around for so long! But their lipstick was a little more precious than ours, it involved wearing crushed gemstones on their lips and eyes. Kind of goes to show how we underestimate our historic little beauty accessories.

In the UK & US

In the UK lip coloring became a trend around the 16th-century when Queen Elizabeth I wore bright red lips and a stark white face. The lipstick of old was made using beeswax and red stains from plants, and only the upper class women and male actors would wear it.

In the US, it began to become popular around the 19th century. Actors and actresses would wear it and it wasn’t really considered suitable for every day use. Nor was it the lipstick we are familiar with today. It was applied with a brush. But when some well-known actresses and socialites began wearing it in public, others followed the trend – much like we do with celebrities and influencers today. Finally, at the end of the 19th century Guerlain was manufacturing lipstick!

Lipstick trends

According to data mined by Polyvore, Nude is the most popular lipstick shade in 74% of the US, there was a 357% increase in searches for nude lipstick after Kylie Jenner launched her “Exposed” Lip Kit. Which just goes to show you Kylie’s power. This year nude and earth tones are so on-trend with the 90’s revival. Everybody has a lipstick, and everybody has a preference, which is why you shouldn’t underestimate the innovative way the lipstick business adapts to the trends around it!

  2. I didn’t know there was something like a National Lipstick Day but since they do days for everything I should have guessed it. I’m a lipstick lover myself and I’m really glad that we have ‘real’ lipsticks now is´nstead of crushed gemstones :D
