We’ve all been there at least once, where we’ve wished so hard for a promotion but have never really got one. And if you’re anything like me, I bet you’ve wondered why? Sometimes all we can see are the reasons why we deserve one rather than focusing on how to get one. We all want to move up in the world, but the question is how? And that’s the one you should be focussing on. The one thing you need to realize is that going that extra mile will be worth it in the long run. And I have a theory that if you follow our simple advice, you will get a promotion, not in 10 years or 5, but next year! Ready?
1. Top dogs learn new tricks
If you’re anything like me, work takes up a very large percentage of your life. It’s not about running out of the door at 5, but going the extra mile even when you’re not asked to. And trust me, this will pay off in the long run. In order to get a promotion, you need to demonstrate your absolute commitment to the company and your progression in the role. Don’t be just concerned with your tasks, but others tasks – if they need help, help them.
Our Make Things Happen 2018 planner will definitely help you make the most of next year, with a monthly overview, advice, and challenges for the month and workbook exercises to help you go for it – you’ll be smashing it. GET 20% OFF WITH CODE BLACKFRIDAY NOW! By taking the time to work on yourself, you will be noticed! Even if it’s not noticed at first, if you keep it up every day your seniors will begin to notice how indispensable you are to the company. If your absence is noticed when you are on holiday, the team will notice that things just don’t run as smoothly without you and there’s your leverage!
2. Make friends in all the right places
Now, this may sound like a cheater’s way to get that promotion without the hard work. But this is simply not the case. Business is all about trust and relationships. If you provide that clear communication and focus on relationship building you will be the first person they think of. Doing this won’t be so easy, you make friends by working hard, doing your job well, being adaptive and most of all, being team driven. And whatever you do, make sure you put some effort into office social life!
Befriending your boss or superior is also a way to learn the ropes. They can become your informal mentor. As you get to know that person, you will understand how they think, how they got to be where they are and therefore help you see your own path more clearly. It’s also a way to demonstrate your personality and stand out from the crowd, building trust and respect with the person who will potentially be in charge of promotions come the new year!
3. Dress for the job you want, not the job you have
So you’re going the extra mile, you’re not running out of the door at 5 and you’re all about those networking events clinking glasses with your boss. Now you’ve got this far, you must think of self-promoting! It’s not enough to befriend your superior and work yourself to the bone if you are going to be self-deprecating or let others get the praise for your hard work. Think self-representation, from the way you talk to the way you dress. Like a lawyer in court, you are presenting a case to your fellow co-workers.
This means staying professional at all times. Make sure you keep a log of your achievements and accomplishments. Your track record will be handy when you are sitting in that interview and subtly interjected into conversations. Bring up your successes with humility by acknowledging the hard work of others. See your triumph as a shared victory. This will demonstrate you are a team player and that you have the company’s interest at heart.
If you are able to keep these 3 tips in mind, I guarantee your promotion will be around the corner!
