We all know that skincare, haircare, and oral care is important, but nearly all of us neglect our eyelashes. Think about it – your eyelashes are regularly tinted, covered in mascara, scrubbed, picked, curled, it’s fair to say they probably deserve some TLC.
Dr. Patricia Pineau, scientific director at L’Oreal, told the Telegraph: “Eyelashes are similar to other hair in many ways, but they have two key differences that we can exploit. The first is the speed of growth, which is much faster in eyelashes while the second is the amount of hair growing at any one time.” So if you want to take advantage of fast growth to make your lashes thick and long, here are some things you need to try…
1. They avoid product build-up
A skincare routine that includes taking off your makeup properly is the most important way to protect your lashes. And that doesn’t mean a quick clean with a face wipe! Find a great cleanser that is specifically kind to the eyes, and spend the time massaging the cleanser into your lashes rather than impatiently rubbing your eye area.
What to use: Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover is a cult favorite for a reason. It’s a non-irritating formula that’s perfect for sensitive skin and will cleanse and remove any makeup and dirt from sensitive areas like eyes and lips. Available here.
2. They get all the vitamins they need
Just like the rest of your body, your eyelashes need plenty of vitamins and water to stay healthy. A protein rich diet is great for your hair and eyelashes, as are vitamins C, E and B complex. If you’re concerned that you’re not getting enough of these vitamins in your normal diet you could consider taking a vitamin supplement.
What to use: Equi’s Beautiful supplement is perfect for an instant health overhaul. It’s an easy-to-take simple supplement powder that contains multi-vitamins that support beautiful skin. Available here.
3. They treat their eyelashes like their hair
You moisturize your face and body and condition your hair – your eyelashes are no different. This is especially important if you have brittle, dry eyelashes, as it can help strengthen and protect them. If you want natural eyelashes that look like eyelash extensions, you have to give them a helping hand.
What to use: Revitalash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner is the perfect moisturizing treatment for your lashes. It conditions the lashes, protects them and helps them grow thicker eyelashes. In studies, 98% of people agreed their lashes were healthier, longer, stronger and fuller after use! Available here.
4. They prime their eyelashes
Eyelash primer is a great idea if you’re a regular mascara user, as a primer can protect and strengthen your lashes and combat the effects of your mascara. Makeup artists use it to make eyelashes longer when using mascara but also to stop mascara from drying out eyelashes or making them fall out!
What to use: Laura Gellar’s Fortifying Eyelash Primer helps you get stronger, thicker lashes. You apply it like mascara and since it’s black, you won’t have any white residue on your eyelashes before following up with your favorite mascara. Available here.
5. They choose a nourishing mascara
Take time to consider which mascara is best for you, and try to stay away from any that contain alcohol as it’s very drying and causes lashes to become brittle and break off. Also try to avoid any containing parabens and phthalates and waterproof mascaras, as they are difficult to remove and thus can lead to lashes breaking off.
What to use: MiLK Makeups lash-loving 74% natural mascara is a good mascara to use when you want to give your eyelashes a break from harsher mascaras. It’s formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates and won’t try or flake, so it’ll care for your lashes while delivering volume and length! Available here.
6. They make their eyelids part of their skincare routine
Keep in mind that your eyelashes are gentle and sensitive, to exploit the fact that they grow faster and stronger than the rest of your hair you should be kind to them. Women with great eyelashes treat them well, which means doing crazy things like the occasional massage with a drop of castor oil at home.
Why it works: Angelina Jolie swears by this tip to get strong and long natural eyelashes. All you have to do is get a clean mascara brush, dip it in castor oil and apply it like mascara to your eyelashes. It has benefits that help hair grow thick and also triggers growth in places where they might be sparse!
