4 Stress Fighting Rituals You Can Do At Home

All we want to live is nice, easygoing lives. But the outside world doesn’t run as smoothly as we’d hope. Stress gets to the best of all of us. Our brains send off stress chemicals when we’re feeling the crunch, which is always. So it can’t be cured, no, but it can be helped. And when stress is everywhere, in our jobs, in our love lives, and in our wardrobes, there are only four things you can do to avoid all of that.

Next time you’re feeling stressed, with your heads in your hands, and you’re trying not to pull your hair out – try these techniques and be the master of your stress:

Ritual one: Clench and relax

Your brain is obviously connected your body, your brain sends signals to your body to alert it into stress mode, so why not send back the message? Sometimes, in situations of over-stress, you can’t calm yourself down, you can’t tell your head to be quiet. So instead, make your body the focus and calm it down, which will, in turn, calm your brain your down.

When you’re stressed, your muscles are tense, even without you realizing. The best way to counteract this stress attack is if you repeatedly clench your facial muscles and relax them. Woolaah…your body has taken charge and laughed at your brain for being so silly!

Ritual two: Slow, deep breaths

Now I bet you’ve heard this one before. But don’t underestimate it. It’s one of the most powerful ones in the book – you just have to be focused when you’re doing it. So you have a nerve called the vagus nerve, now it’s key because it’s in charge of your emotions and the directions they can go. Sending signals from your heart to your brain, it’s responsible for keeping you sharp. By stimulating this nerve, you’re onto a winner to fixing your stress levels. Obviously, you can’t go in there and give it a massage, but instead, trick it with your breathing.

One of the fastest ways to change your emotional state is through breathing, who’d have known, huh? Breathe in slowly through your nose, count to eight and pause for a few more seconds then exhale for eight. A little tip for free is… if you want more energy? Breathe faster!

Ritual 3: Cold water

Cold water will trick your vagus nerve into slowing down your heart rate. All of a sudden your brain will feel your heart rate slowing, and it will be like ‘Oh…we’re not stressed anymore!’ It really is as simple is that, if you’re feeling anxious, stressed or a little out of control, just splash!

Ritual 4: Listen to some music

This is one of my saviors! I finally let go when I have my earphones in, and I feel as if I’ve got a bit of breathing space back. Music has the power to affect how you feel. It’s the easiest, subtlest way of fighting those bad feelings with positive ones. Doing a little dance will also help your mood pick up quicker! But seriously, your favorite song has the power, and making music is even better!
