Wondering how to set goals and achieve them? In life, you make a decision, you are either part of someone else’s plan or you make your own plan. There are two types of people in the world, those who go with the flow and believe that the Universe owes them something, and those that go out there and seize the moment.
It’s better to take your destiny into your own hands and set some serious goals for the future than it is to sit back and wait for your dreams to come true. The problem most of us face at this time of year when a fresh year is sprawling out ahead of us is actually achieving our goals.
You can set as many resolutions as you want, but finding the motivation to get up and achieve them is the toughest part. With that said, here are some tips for achieving your goals that will make 2020 your best year yet!
CONTROL YOUR LIFE, DON’T LET IT CONTROL YOU
You set a goal and before you know it one year turns into ten and you’ve never achieved it. Here’s what you need to know, you can do it. You don’t need permission or even certain skills to do what you have in mind. You just get up, and you just graft.
Setting goals is just the beginning, it’s a step in controlling your own life that you need to take. And it starts when you write your goals down.
Goal setting is a skill, actually, because it’s not just about writing down what you want to happen, it’s about making it happen. Making it happen even when you don’t feel like it, even when you’re lacking motivation and inspiration. You can use the Goals 2020 Diary to make goal-setting easy, give yourself monthly check-ins, goals, and to-dos and stay on track by monitoring your progress every week.
FIND YOUR PURPOSE
If you don’t know your purpose, how are you going to set the right goals? Your goals need to be things that you’re passionate about, not things you think you should be doing. And they don’t have to propel you towards success either, they can be as simple as spending more time with your family.
Try this Ikigai exercise to figure out what your purpose in life is, it works by asking you questions about what you’re passionate about, good at, and what good you can bring to the world.
KEEP YOUR GOALS WITH YOU
You may know what you want and where you are going. But it is extremely important to have a written plan for what you have set yourself to achieve, and how you plan to get there. Writing it down makes it real, and as soon as you start believing that it’s real, you’ll start working towards it. That’s why the Goals 2020 Diary is so essential, it has plenty of space to write down your monthly and weekly goals so you can stay on track throughout the year.
As you work on what you want to achieve, many things will pop up to distract you. This is the danger zone when things start popping up and you get distracted, and your goals fall to the wayside. You need to write down your plan and check back on it. Make sure that you’re still working on it, analyze the places where you’re falling behind and track your progress. This is the only way you’ll stay one step ahead of any obstacle or distraction that comes your way.
FIND SOMEONE TO MOTIVATE YOU
One of the most tricky things to do is find someone who is as passionate about you hitting your goal as you are. Someone who’s going to nag you if you’re not working on it and check-in with you to make sure it happens. You can actually hire someone to be your accountability partner if you’re willing to pay someone a small fee to blow up your inbox and call you to find out how you’re doing – if not, find a trusted friend or family member who can be hard on you when they need to be.
An accountability system ties your goal to a person, community or public who will hold you accountable. The shame you feel when someone asks you ‘how’s your novel going?’ is a way bigger motivator than the secret goals you keep to yourself.
