You probably know her as the fiercely strong and independent female powerhouse, she is a Grammy award winning singer, a successful and well established actress, and mother to two beautiful children. On paper she sounds confident, happy and fearless but in reality she is no different to any other woman. Away from all the glitz and the glamour, Alicia Keys has battled her whole life with self acceptance. In an open letter she recently spoke about her struggle with accepting herself, finding success at such a young age and being scared to show who she really was in fear of rejection. Alicia now accepts that its okay to not want to hold back, its okay to let your true self shine and its okay to love yourself.
“I don’t have to hide any more, I don’t have to pretend and hold back, I don’t have to think that my intelligence, beauty and sensuality are intimidating to others, who cares!” – Alicia Keys. Girl power is back and we love it!
“You are allowed to be smart”
As a young girl Alicia excelled at school, she was academic and a natural when it came to exams. Instead of embracing this she hid away from it, scared that she would be deemed a teachers pet and be made fun of. Living in a world where we are scared to be successful in fear of other people not approving, is not a world we should be living in. If being successful makes you happy then no one else should matter.
“You are allowed to be tough”
Women can often be seen as being less superior to men, we don’t always seem to have the respect that we deserve when it comes to taking the lead and taking charge, especially in certain professions. Sometimes it takes a strong and powerful women to change that, show the world who is boss and kick butt, whether your wearing heels or not whilst you do so is beside the point!
“You are allowed to be beautiful”
There is no shame in admitting you are beautiful, because you are! We all hold beauty within us and the most important thing is being beautiful on the inside. If you are a good person with a good heart and good intentions then you have every right to stand there and call yourself beautiful. There are too many women in the world who are so quick to dismiss themselves because of a simple flaw or imperfection, you should realise that it is those little imperfections that actually make you all the more beautiful, be proud of that.
“You are allowed to be radical and have strong thoughts that others might not agree with”
Never hold back on what you believe to be true, if you have an opinion stand by it. Never let anyone belittle and undermine you, if we all shared the same opinions the world would be a very boring place. Allowing yourself to think certain thoughts and have your own opinions allows you to be an individual, you should hold your head up high and own it.
“You are allowed to be yourself!”
Because who else would you want to be.
