There’s a fair chance that many of us will be in a position of leadership at some point or another. Whether you’re starting a business, or working your way up in a company. Being in charge of other people can be a little intimidating. But if you want to be in charge and be a good boss, there are a few skills you need.

1. Lead by Example

A good boss will lead by example. The actions and behaviors of a boss have the ability to set an unspoken standard about what is appropriate and what is not appropriate. Not to mention, a boss that says one thing but does another will eventually lose credibility with their employees.

2. Give Constructive Criticism

I’ll be honest, no one likes to be criticized. In spite of that, a boss will eventually have to correct their employees. A great way for a boss to go about this is by instead of telling an employee that they did something wrong, they would say something along the lines of “I really like how you did [this] but I think we can improve [this]”.

3. Be A Good Mentor

An effective boss will view their position as both a leader and a mentor. To be a great mentor, a boss would need to assume that their employees may not know what do and how to do it. There is a fine line between being able to give direction and not stepping in and micro-managing though.

4. Recognizing Efforts

Another important skill that a boss needs to have is the ability to recognize when an employee is putting in the effort. Just a simple “you are doing a great job on [this]” can really boost employee morale! Being more specific will make the compliment more sincere.

5. Get To Know Everybody

While you do not need to be best friends with everybody, it is nice to be interested in everyone and get along. When a boss takes the time to ask how their employees are and is genuinely interested, it makes them feel important. Knowing that my boss is even slightly concerned about my life makes me feel good.
