Overnight beauty tips: how to wake up beautiful!

We’ve all heard the term ‘beauty sleep’ being thrown around, but how do you actually determine if your sleep is beautiful when you wake up with your hair all over the place and needing extra time for your beauty routine? The life of a busy girl is a hard one, so why not use your 8 hours of sleep well and let yourself wake up feeling fresh and alert in the morning. Here’s some things that contribute to your beauty routine and are so easy you can do them with your eyes closed! Hurrah for lie-ins!

#1 Get a new pillowcase
According to Jesleen Ahluwalia, M.D., a physician from Spring Street Dermatology in NYC, “Silk is easier on hair — it helps avoid tangles and breakage. It’s also better for the skin because the material glides easily and prevents creasing and wrinkles.” A silk or satin pillowcase could just help you wake up with the best hair of your life, and keep those wrinkles at bay, just make sure you change it regularly!

#2 Invest in a humidifier
If you regularly suffer from dry skin in the winter that no amount of moisturising can fix, you might just be dehydrated! Make sure you’re drinking a healthy amount of water, and if you are, then invest in a humidifier. During the night your skin will dry out regardless of how much water you’ve been drinking, a humidifier will keep moisture in the air and allow your skin to stay hydrated.

#3 Spend time on your routine
The hours that you’re asleep can help you look your best in the morning, so make sure you spend those extra five minutes before bed on your nightly skincare routine. Exfoliate, cleanse and moisturise so you go to bed with a clean face and wake up without any nasty spots or imperfections. A handy tip is to keep your moisturiser in the fridge so it’s nice and cool when you apply it to your face.

#4 Banish those eye bags
If you wake up regularly with dark circles under your eyes despite getting enough sleep, you need a quick fix to soften them before you apply your makeup in the morning. If eye cream or moisturiser isn’t working you might want to try green tea. Brew two caffeinated green tea bags and then leave them in the fridge for 10-20 minutes until they’re cool. Squeeze the excess moisture out and apply to your eyes and leave for 15-30 minutes, caffeine shrinks blood vessels while the tannins in the tea bags tighten and soothe skin. If you’re looking for a miracle working concealer, I find Erase Paste by Benefit works amazingly to hide my genetically tired-looking eyes.

#5 Lengthen lashes
Apply castor oil to a clean mascara wand and apply from root to tip of your lashes before you go to sleep. Continue using this technique for the best results as you’re essentially conditioning your eyelashes and helping to promote growth. If you’re eyebrow hair is lacking, you can brush the oil into your brows before bed too! Just remember to wash it off in the morning or your makeup won’t stay put throughout the day.

#6 Perfect that pout
Use a lip scrub in the evening to stimulate the blood in your lips, and then apply generous amounts of your favourite balm before going to sleep. You’ll wake up with soft lips that don’t chap before you apply product on them.

#7 Sleep peacefully
If you’re a restless sleeper, it might be worth while to download an app like headspace and do ten minutes of mindful meditation before you go to sleep. Doing breathing exercises and visualisation techniques can help relax your brain and get it ready for sleep, banishing stimulants in the evening such as coffee and alcohol will also help you sleep better. If you’re having trouble falling asleep make time for a hot bath before bedtime and pick up a good book to browse in bed, and banish all electronics from the realms of your dreams!

  1. I’ve been switching my pillow up more for hygiene and it feels a lot better, plus spending time on my routine – as if it were a spa – makes me a bit sleepy!
