Coffee Talk: Is This The Key To A Happier Morning?

photo: Free People

What is the key to a happier morning? We’re all different. Some of us jump out of bed at the crack of dawn to have a smoothie and go for a run, some of us keep our eyes closed and our sheets over our heads until the last minute, and some of us can’t form a sentence until we’ve had our coffee.

Amy Cuddy says the key to a happier morning is power posing before you’ve even left the bed. She’s the leading Harvard Psychologist behind the trending TED talk we’ve all seen about how your body language shapes who you are. It’s something we all do, but don’t think about.

1. It’s all about your pose!

She says the first thing you should do as part of your morning routine is to lie back and stretch your whole body as wide as possible. This is because making your body as wide and as huge as possible from the moment you wake will give you confidence and happiness. If you’re slumped over and grouchy, you’ll carry that feeling with you throughout the day. It’s something to think about, a simple change like this could help you actually get out of bed before you snooze your alarm!

2. My morning routine could be better…

I wake up, drink some water, brush my teeth, start doing my makeup and getting dressed and leave the house. Of course, I want to do more. I’d love to go out and run (but I’m scared I might die!), to eat my breakfast at home, to have time to curl my hair. But when my eyes are closed in the morning I just can’t face it.

It can’t just be me who wants to change this year!

3. Now I’m turning it over to you…

I’m interested to know what the ‘perfect’ morning routine is, and if there even is one? Let’s have a chat, shall we? If you do find time to exercise, how? What’s your favorite thing about the morning? What does your morning routine look like right now? What do you want help with? Let’s help each other!

Looking forward to chatting with you! – B

My morning routine is waking up, get dressed and heading over the gym for a 30 minute workout. Then I go home get dressed have breakfast and get ready for work. I would love to get some tips on quick breakfast and quick make up tips!

    • I know about quick make up actually, maybe other Career Girls can help you, too. To be honest, it’s all about products that work seriously quickly – we did an article on it the other day actually. At the moment I love Stila’s color corrector and stay all day eyeliner when I can’t be bothered to do a full face of makeup. I really struggle with finding time to fit working out into my schedule. How do you do it?

  • Jess

Hi, yes more articles on Morning Routines please!

    • Hi Jess! We love morning routines haha, in fact, I’m always asking women what their morning routines look like. The most ambitious one I’ve heard of was getting up at 5am to meditate for an hour and write part of a book before the rest of her family woke up. I love my bed far too much for that, but I know mine could be so much better. What does your morning routine look like right now? x

  • My morning routine is:

I wake up up at 06.30
Workout with the Nike Fitness Club App
Go home and prepare a power smoothie: Spirulina, Equi London, kale, banana etc.
Hop in the shower, get dressed and do my make up in 5 minutes.
Make some tea and bring it to work in a travel mug.

    • Your morning routine is so good! I wake up at 7:45 haha! x

My morning routine (when I’m good, haha):

    Wake up at 6am
Brush teeth, throw hair in a pony tail, apply a little mascara, eyeliner and (of course) moisturizer
Head to a 7am or 7:30am barre class (I’m too hyper/non focused to work out at a typical gym or run on my own)
Change into work attire, grab a Starbucks coffee for the train
Head into work and start the day off with some yogurt.

Thinking on this, I should probably have something a little heartier like granola/fruit or even eat before working out. ;)

    • That sounds so great! Tempted to follow a barre class as well!

You should, not boring, motivating without getting you too sweaty but ur sore – proof thy your burning hella calories. Just finished mine 😊

Okay, so my typical work day (+a good nights rest) starts off early.

I go work out at 5:15am- workout for about an hour
    Come back home about 6:20am
    Take a shower
    Get dressed at about 7am
Do my makeup for at least 15 mins
Change into my dress code appropriate work uniform
Eat breakfast and be out the door at 7:45 am.
I have at least an hour and 15 min commute to work. That’s without traffic, so I am always hoping for the best.

And that will then be 14 hrs away from home. Working 12 hr shifts. plus the hours to go to work and go back home.

I use my phone for my alarm and have the alarm set to start out quiet and work up. That way it’s not shocking me awake. Makes for a much more peaceful beginning. Also, if you can, start the alarm at where you are getting up now, and don’t snooze it. Every 2 or 3 days (twice a week or so) move it back in 5 minute increments until you’re up at the time you desire. This is how I got myself reset from 7:15 to 5 a.m. For a while I needed to get up at 4:30 . . . did the same “trick.” Thank goodness I’m back to 5 :) Also, you have to get to bed 7-8 hours before you need to get up. VERY difficult for me, but well worth the effort.

On days i go work out before work i get up 530AM. Go to gym, work out, come back home by about 645. Shower, makeup, hair, get dressed, have coffee while watching news. That takes me about 45 mins. I’m not sure how people are doing their hair and makeup so quick ! i like to wear a decent amount of makeup (though sometimes i wonder why i spend 20 mins trying to make it look like i’m almost not wearing any makeup!) and my hair needs done well since i work in a professional office. i guess it just makes me feel good and i have learned when i skip steps or dont allow products to dry properly i will have bad results. Then i eat breakfast (my boyfriend makes it basically scrambled eggs and 1/2 banana every day). we chat a bit, i look at my daily to do list, moan about not wanting to go to work, etc. I’m out the door no later than 8 and at my desk by 830. If i don’t work out i just get up at 6 and am at work closer to 730. I guess i have found some happiness in slowing my mornings down. i used to think by BF was a bit nuts with wanting to eat breakfast together, but now i see the value in his slower approach. while we eat i fill in my gratitude journal lately and it also sets me off on the right foot. thinking back to my prior schedule i was so much more go as fast as possible get out the door asap eat at my desk type person. i was starting out so frazzled. yes i got to work earlier but then i would need a few mins to settle myself, eat breakfast, etc that i really wan’t any more productive. Just my personal thoughts here…i LOVE learning others routines !

    Mine is:
    – alarm 630
    – snooze to 7
    – eat eggs
    – gym 60 mins
    – meditate 15 mins
    – read bine 10 mins
    – write out mantra 10 mins
    – hit work
With one rule. Not email until 11am!

I have it drilled into my mind in the morning, that though it feels SO difficult to wake up, I know I never regret it.

I wake up at 6:30 and head to the gym by 7:30.
-I leave a change of workout clothes by the side of my bed, tumble out and change immediately. This makes it insanely difficult for me to go back to sleep.
-I drink water and prepare a simple breakfast with egg and avocado on toast.
-I give myself 30 minutes of quiet time with a good morning soundtrack, the quiet and admiring the rain or the sunshine. (the weather is so bipolar these days.)
-I make it over to the gym for a couple hours.
-Pick up a coffee on my way back home.
-Shower, change and make myself a smoothie and proper breakfast/meal. All before 10am. (I work from home. So I have the luxury of choosing my schedule.)
