Today, Kensington Palace released a statement on behalf of the Prince addressing his relationship with Meghan, and finally, confirming it. The prince said “a line has been crossed” after the media reported on his emerging relationship.

“Some of this has been very public,” the statement read. “The smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”

Indeed, in reporting about a relationship that hadn’t even been confirmed many news outlets chose to show screencaps of her steamy scenes in suits, her mother’s house and also chose to dig into her past. They presented her for comment as if it was up to the public whether their relationship would work or not.

“Prince Harry is worried about Ms Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” it said. “It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms Markle should be subjected to such a storm.

“This is not a game – it is her life and his. He has asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done. He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly.”

It is unusual for the royal family to be so open about issues that affect their personal lives. Prince Harry knows that by doing this he risks many media outlets choosing to take it as a confirmation of the relationship and continue on the same track as they were, Meghan is more than just Prince Harry’s girlfriend. She’s a UN advocate, a public speaker and the founder of The Tig.

She was cool before Prince Harry, but now she’s under so much scrutiny and pressure and the headlines are nastier than ever. Royal correspondents believe that while the UK press will take this into consideration, the foreign press may not be so kind, as stories about Meghan and Prince Harry tend to generate a lot of income.

It’s really frustrating that in the 21st century Prince Harry had to ask the media not to be racist about his girlfriend. He had to break the silence and confirm the relationship before the rumors got ugly, even if he didn’t want to, even though the relationship is in its infancy. Because people got carried away trying to make stories that sell and forgot that these people are humans. No matter what their title is or where they’ve come from.

  1. Sadly, I don’t think the media will pay attention at all. By the way, CGD has officially become my media news outlet, haha!
