Here at CGD we’re always looking for new ways to save time and try new awesome products. Luckily, Birchbox have got us sorted, their monthly subscription box is the best way to discover your favourite products and even top up on some of your old reliables. I’m not going to lie I’m a sucker for themed boxes, so I had to investigate further when Birchbox announced you could now build your own box (BYOB)! A few people aren’t sure whether they want the commitment of subscribing to a beauty box, however this build your own box workshop is a great way to put some choice into the customer’s hands.
I visited the Birchbox beauty workshop that’s taken up residence in Selfridges, Oxford Street. However, if you live in the US don’t despair! The store in Manhattan allows you to take part in this amazing experience too! In the case of the London event, it runs until the 27th September, so if anybody’s looking for a reason to take a train to our beloved capital city, this might just be it!
Step One: Arriving in store!
I love Selfridges, I get all my quirky magazines from the Oxford Street store so I didn’t really need an excuse to wander down on my bank holiday Monday. My first impression of the Birchbox stand was that the staff were so nice! I didn’t feel intimidated hovering by the stand and I was immediately asked if I wanted to have a look around and come back, to which I confidently remarked that I’d come especially to make my own box, so I’d be staying for a while. The staff on hand were so helpful and such babes, they gave me a break down of the available products, told me their favourites, tried to fetch me a purple bag when I lamented that I didn’t really want an orange one (they were sold out!) and in general really helped out with the whole process. It’s really great when staff are accommodating, I felt like I was talking to a few friends that happened to be experts in beauty products.
Step Two: Choosing your products!
The hard part was choosing my products. You get a menu that tells you a little bit about all the products, I confess I didn’t really look at it, I spent my time picking every product up and critically assessing its ability to fit into my handbag. You get to choose two makeup products, one skincare, one body care, one hair care and a beauty treat. I was sold on the fact that one of the products has a RRP of £50 ($76.02) , I’m all about getting good value!
Step Three: My Products!
Makeup: Lord & Berry Couture Kohl Jajal Eye Pencil in Black
ModelCo Power Lash Black Mascara
I tried my new mascara straight away, I’m a bit of a mascara addict and keep losing all my natural falsies so I’m always looking for a way to lengthen my eyelashes. Luckily this mascara works miracles. Also, I’m a bit wary of eyeliner these days and prefer liquid on the top lash line over anything on the waterline, and I’ve never tried Lord & Berry cosmetics before but I’m sold now. Unlike my other eyeliner this pencil does not disappear from my waterline or smudge throughout the day. It might be a good time to start rocking retro overlined eyes I think.
Skincare: Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream
The tub is gorgeous, and according to my research a 30ml tub costs £50 ($76.02), so of course I snapped this baby up. Supposedly this is good for anti-aging, and works to reduce wrinkles, firm skin and increase radiance in just 15 days. Obviously I’m going to have to put it to rigorous testing to say for sure, I luckily don’t need any anti-wrinkle solutions just yet but it’s never too early to start. What I will say is, this worked immediately to relieve the dry skin I suffer with on my face. It smells great and absorbs quickly without being too greasy.
Body care: Trilogy Everything Balm
I could have picked anything else, but I’m always looking for new ways to combat the dry skin I get thanks to London pollution. This balm is the saviour for all sufferers of dry, dull, skin. It’s a little like a giant lip balm that can be applied anywhere that needs a bit of a condition. You can use it on your face, body, cuticles, lips, and probably on your hair although I’m not sure how that would work. The packaging is cute, it smells great and it feeds dry skin straight away. I like to use it on my lips with a bit of lip liner for a quick glossy shine.
Haircare: Beauty Protector Protect & Oil
I’m not going to lie, I was sold on the bottle. It looks raunchy, with red and black detailing. So far the most compliments I’ve had are for this bottle alone. According to the menu I should’ve taken two, but I only picked up one – silly me! Which I’m regretting now because the bottle is quite small, and the product packs a punch. It’s a detangler that protects your hair against UV rays and heat damage and also seals the cuticle for healthier hair, it smells amazing, is non greasy and weightless so I can spray it liberally all over and bask in the beautiful scent. If only I’d read the menu properly I’d have known to pick up two. Grr!
Beauty Treat: This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray
I don’t really need help sleeping, I need help waking up! But I thought that I could use a wonder product for those times when I know I have an early morning and I just can’t sleep because I’m too restless with thoughts and to-dos for the rest of the day. The idea is to spray a fine mist over your pillow and then it should act as a natural sedative, sending you into a deep sleep. I need it for early mornings, exciting days and long flights!
Step Four: Pay.
All of these products that I crammed inside my birchbox weren’t cheap, but it only cost £15 to build and collect my box. The box itself is super cute and comes with a neat little bag to carry all your beauty essentials in. In the US a similar service is just $15, and if you aren’t sure about paying for a subscription it’s a great taster, plus (in the UK) you get a code for 50% off your first box with Selfridges. Sold!
My experience of building my own birchbox was pretty cool. I came home with a smile and new things to try, and later on when I was hunched over my computer working I knew I had something to look forward to. Do you subscribe to any beauty boxes?
