How Your Selfie Obsession Is Affecting Your Weight

What do we know about modern women? That we’re self-obsessed? That we’re insecure? That’s what we’re told. Body shame is more prevalent than ever, plus we’re all just trying to make it in a stressful world. Detoxes for mind and body are everywhere, and we’re having more anxiety attacks than ever.

But how about some good news?

A new study of more than 100,000 female and male participants shows that women’s unhappiness with their weight has actually declined over time. “The last two decades have witnessed increasing attention and awareness on a body acceptance movement aimed primarily at girls and women,” said Bryan Karazsia, PhD, of The College of Wooster, who presented the research, “That, combined with increased media visibility of role models who run counter to the trend towards thinness, may, in part, help explain their findings.

Amazing to think that role models who look ‘different’ to what we expect to see in the media are actually helping with our general body acceptance, but I also think it’s got something to do with our selfie obsession. I for one know how I look hunched over in a bikini top #rollsfordays, but I’m not about to snap that for all my followers to see. And I also don’t give a damn if my boyfriend and a bunch of strangers on the beach see my cellulite.

But when I’m snapping in the mirror or taking a selfie of how skinny my face looks (contour) I feel confident as hell. Fire emoji x 1000. And knowing and owning that isn’t a bad thing at all.

I want our generation to be the generation that says ‘eff your beauty standards’. With the rise of Instagram and Snapchat, we are seeing more diverse, normal bodies than ever before. According to Good Therapy, “the selfie empowers females to celebrate not just their looks but also their accomplishments by shooting “tiny bursts of pride into cyberspace, thereby encouraging other young women to do the same…”

If that’s not a case for bikini body selfies, I don’t know what is!
