We all know what a big night out can do to our body, mind and soul – yet there’s a very high chance that when Friday rolls around we’re all about passing the wine and ordering from the cocktail menu.
However, if you’re after perfect skin you might want to step away from your second round of cocktails and listen up, because we’ve got some bad news.
According to Dr. Lancer (dermatologist to Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian to name a few) the effects of drinking a few too many can last on your skin for 30 days!
How?
Well, according to Dr. Lancer diet triggers hormonal responses which present themselves in the skin. Sugar (mostly found in alcohol) is a bad trigger. It inflames the lining of your stomach and sends a signal to your brain to produce more testosterone – which can cause acne.
Also worth noting is the fact that alcohol naturally dehydrates your body, including the skin – your body’s largest organ. It also deprives the skin of vitamins and nutrients, and can permanently damage the skin over time. When managing my brief bout of rosacea, alcohol was explored as one of the triggers. It can lead to facial disfigurement – so it’s really important to understand what alcohol can actually do.
So I can’t enjoy myself?
Well, yes. Of course. Don’t be a prisoner to facts like this, if you’re living a strict lifestyle with no fun because you might get a wrinkle or a break-out you aren’t really enjoying life at all. Dr. Lancer admits that most celebrities don’t go above one glass of wine if they know they need to have perfect skin, but they also have nutritionists specifically for their skin, not for their weight.
I don’t think that’s altogether necessary for us mere mortals, but I do think it’s important to know the risks and be sensible. As with all areas of our health, taking care of our skin is important too! Just as you’d protect it from the sun, you should try to minimize drinking.
What can I do to minimize the risks?
In your twenties, alcohol takes around 3 hours to leave the body. In your forties, it takes 33 hours. So you don’t have to worry about the long-lasting affects of enjoying yourself with the girls on a Friday night. But you should remember to drink water regularly and after you’ve recovered take some time to be kind to your skin.
Use a mask that’s proven to replenish and preserve hydration while brightening and cleansing like Fresh Peony Brightening Night Treatment Mask and treat your sore eyes to some Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels. The perfect excuse to pamper!
