We’ve all had those days, the kind of sluggish days where everything you accomplish just feels inadequate. The days where something happened that makes you feel shitty and seeps into your work life. Whether your boss gave you a negative comment, or you had an argument with your parents about your future, those days are hard to bounce back from. They say that on those days, it’s better to just do your best, crawl into bed and hope that tomorrow is better.
But I disagree. On those days, the truly punch-to-the-gut kind of days, you need to give yourself a minute. One minute. 60 seconds. That’s all it takes to turn it around. Since my burnout a few months ago, I really believe in the power of 60 seconds, so here’s how to do it.
Figure out the root of your problem
You’re in a bad mood. Sometimes you can’t find the cause, other times it’s a little more obvious. You’ve unfollowed everyone on Facebook, you’re upset with your boyfriend, you’re desperate to move out. How you use your 60 seconds is directly related to the cause of your bad mood, so figure it out before you try to fix it.
Get some space
The best, best, thing you can do is get away from everyone. Go and stand outside, or take yourself to a quiet area. You might think people are helping you feel better, but often, they’re just a way for you to avoid dealing with your issue. If you feel like you might cry when nobody’s around to see you, do it!
Set a timer
Now you have 60 seconds. More than enough time. You’re going to say everything that’s bothering you, or write it down if you can’t say it out loud in your office bathroom. Give yourself 60 seconds to feel those emotions, to get annoyed, to acknowledge you’re in a bad bloody mood, and that it’s okay. It’s okay to feel emotion, you don’t have anything to apologize for. So feel it.
Turn it around
Now give yourself a mantra. You’ve felt it, acknowledged it, now you’re going to move on. You’ll resolve any issues when you have the emotional strength and time, you don’t want to waste your energy on this when you could be being your bad-ass self. If you need to, take a couple of seconds to watch hilarious videos of dogs and children falling over. That always does it for me.
There you have it. Your day is changed! Hurrah! You can work with a weight lifted, and if it doesn’t work – you can always use another 60 seconds to silently swear into your rolled up jacket in the office bathrooms. Cathartic.
