We all think we should have our lives together by the time we’re in our twenties. We want a good job, strong relationship and even a house of our own. However, most of us don’t even know what day it is or what we are having for dinner tonight, and that’s fine!
It takes a while to realize that everyone is always learning, and there is always more to learn! So here are 6 important skills to master in your twenties, to at least look like you know what you’re doing. After all, as they always say, ‘fake it ’till you make it!’
1. HOW TO MAKE A SMALL TALK
Instead of sitting scrolling through Instagram when we feel awkward in a social situation, learning to spark up an interesting conversation with someone is an important skill and one that you will benefit from your whole life. It is such an underrated talent, but being brave for a few minutes could end up with a new friendship, new business connections or new thoughts.
2. LOOKING AFTER YOUR BODY

Learn which foods will nurture your body, and which to avoid. Learn the importance of exercising daily, and come to terms with your so-called imperfections and see them as what make you, you. Always put your health first, go for your check-ups and pay attention to your body.
3. LEARN TO COOK
Being able to cook a family roast, or even just a weekday spaghetti is an important skill to master in your twenties. You don’t want to be ringing your parents when you move out asking how to cook every meal. Get a few recipes for all occasions under your belt and then you can start experimenting with new cuisines and flavors. No more cheese on toast here!
4. LEARN TO STICK UP FOR YOURSELF
Whether it’s at work, in a friendship or amongst family, never let anyone make you feel small. Don’t overreact over small disagreements but when you feel strongly about something, voice your opinion in a controlled manner. If you are upset, speak out, don’t bottle up your emotions.
5. LEARN TO DEAL WITH CRITICISM AND REJECTION
Our twenties are a time for exploration and development, whether it be academic, personal or in your career. It’s important to learn that everyone gets rejected sometimes, and that’s okay! Some things will work out amazingly but when they don’t it’s key to take the positives from the situation and move forward stronger and better than before. Do not dwell on things, keep your chin up and keep pushing for what you want.
6. LEARN TO HAVE A LONG VIEW
Big dreams are what make us strive for our goals and keep moving forward, never let anyone tell you they are unrealistic. They might take a few months or even a few years, but they are always possible. Your twenties are a marathon, not a sprint. By developing a long-view, you’ll have the ability to see beyond the immediate setbacks and to see them as small detours on the road to your dreams, no matter what size dream that may be.
The Career Girl Academy is back on Sunday 29 January and if you want to think like a successful person, you don’t want to miss this!
