Our mid-20s are awesome. We’re finally starting getting serious about our career, moving out on our own, and beginning to feel like adults. But when we look in the mirror, our skin looks so dull and lifeless! And is that a wrinkle popping up around the corner of our eye?
It seems like our skin is starting to age just as soon as we’re beginning our life! Fret not. With these easy tips, we won’t just stop premature ageing in its tracks. We’ll look younger too!
#1. Clean up!
Your face, that is. Morning and night. Sleeping with makeup on is no good for your skin. It clogs the pores and causes zits. Worse, all those impurities prevent your serums and moisturizers from penetrating deep into the skin, reducing their effectiveness. So, if you want to keep those premature wrinkles at bay, clean up!
#2. Don’t forget to exfoliate!
Did you know that skin can exfoliate on its own? Bad news is, it slowly loses this ability as we age. When that happens, dead cells start accumulating on the surface of our skin, making it rough and dull. Give it a helping hand by applying a glycolic acid based exfoliant, like Derma E Overnight Peel with Alpha Hydroxy Acids, three times a week. Your skin will be a lot brighter, smoother, and softer!
#3. Step up your moisturizing game
A basic cream, like Nivea Creme, worked well when we were teens. Now that we’re a bit older, we need something rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin c, green tea, and resveratrol, that help us fight free radicals, one of the main causes of premature ageing. Choose one that’s suitable for your skin type. A lightweight lotion, like Olay Regenerist Regenerating Lotion with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50, is perfect for oily skin. Dry-skinned girls will benefit more from something richer, like Dr Dennis Gross Age Erase Moisture With Mega 10 Plus. Don’t forget to apply it to your neck too!
#4. Hello retinol!
Don’t wait until fine lines and wrinkles start to creep up to do something about them. By then, it’s usually too late. You can prevent a lot of damage by starting using a serum with retinol in your mid ’20s. Why retinol? This powerful antioxidant can boost collagen production and firm skin (Source). Our favourite is Paula’s Choice Resist Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum. It’s lightweight, and infused with wrinkle-fighting antioxidants too.
#5. Shield your skin from UV rays
Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach, ladies! If ageing gracefully and slowly is your goal, you must use it every day. Yes, even in winter. UV rays are sneaky. The damage they cause shows up as wrinkles years later. So be smart, and add sunscreen to your skincare routine. We love mineral based sunscreens, like Budger Balm SPF 30 Unscented Sunscreen Cream. It’s both gentle and effective.
#6. Bust that acne
Is acne still bothering you? Don’t despair. Hormonal changes in your 20s can often trigger acne, but keeping it under control is easier than you think. How? Use an exfoliant or moisturizer with salicylic acid, like Philosophy Clear Days Ahead Oil-free Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment & Moisturizer.
Salicylic acid can penetrate inside the pores, removing all the dead cells and excess oil that accumulate in them and cause breakouts. If your acne is really stubborn, try benzoyl peroxide. It’s quite harsh, but great at killing the bacteria that causes acne. You can find it in Proactive & Proactiv+ Pore Targeting Treatment.
#7. It’s all in the lifestyle
Good skin starts from within. There’s only so much skincare products can do if we don’t take good care of our bodies and live a healthy lifestyle. Both regular exercise and a balanced diet with plenty of antioxidant rich fruits and veggies do wonders for the skin, and help it stay healthy and younger.
