Why Sophia Amoruso Didn’t Buy Anything When She Became A Millionaire

Ok, I’ve read #Girlboss. I know how cool and inspiring Sophia Amoruso is, we all do. But sometimes I need a reminder of just how cool she is. Like being a millionaire and not buying anything cool.

I mean, if I made a million I’d go on a shopping spree. I’d probably buy a house. I’d get Spotify premium. I’d do stupid things. But Sophia kept her head cool, and it’s a great lesson for anybody who wants to become successful.

On her spending habits she said: A “big no-no is increasing your spending as soon as your income increases.”

She was also so wrapped up in making her clothing line Nasty Gal that spending money didn’t even cross her mind, “Even if I had wanted to drop $500 on a pair of shoes, I was just too busy.” She’s a fan of the phrase “Money looks better in the bank than it does on your feet” and there’s a reason for that.

Sure, it’s all well and good writing that when you’re heading out for a shopping spree the next day, but I always find that I regret my shopping sprees by the end of the month. Never increase your spending to match your income, and in fact, when shopping try to take a budget with you.

I love buying new things, but I have to be reasonable so I don’t sink my entire month’s budget into things I end up never wearing. Money allows us to buy luxuries, to care for our family, to do what we love, but you should be wary. In her book she says: “My adopted political ideals had let me approach money with an elevated level of distaste. I saw it as a materialistic pursuit for materialistic people, but what I have realized over time is that in many ways, money spells freedom.”

Watch this video of Sophia explaining that business is just making money from what you love:

But you have to be strict with yourself and remember – when you become a millionaire – sit on that money before you spend it!

I really wish Sophia would come out with more business books, or create a girl boss course of some sort. There’s just something about her that I love, and feel like she can do it better than anyone else. I also love the Spotify comment lol. Great post!

Great advice! I just had my income increased due to a raise and although it was tempting to increase my shopping and dining out I stuck with my old budget saving routines =o)
