With over 9 and a half million YouTube subscribers, 6.3 million Instagram followers and 3.9 million Twitter followers, Zoella has amassed a firm internet following over the past few years. And her talent isn’t limited to YouTube either as she released her first novel, Girl Online, last November which broke records as the highest first-week sales of a first-time novelist since records began. She launched her beauty line, Zoella Beauty, last year which was dubbed the “biggest beauty launch of the year” whilst the sequel to Girl Online came out last month. Here’s how she did it..
Learn how to love yourself
Zoella has always been an advocate of encouraging body confidence and loving yourself. She’s wrote several blog posts about her fast metabolism and being asked “Why she was so skinny?” at school. She states, “I think a lot of people are very quick to comment on people’s size or body weight and I think really that is something that should be avoided.”
She continues, “If you are happy with the way you look, that’s all that matters, and if you aren’t, chances are you are doing something about it and working towards something you know you will make you happy.” Moral of the story – learn to love yourself and appreciate all your imperfections because these are what makes you so unique.
It’s okay to have bad days
On paper, her life can seem pretty perfect but Zoella has been open with the fact she suffers from anxiety, a long-term mental health condition, which causes the person to feel anxious about wide-ranging issues, small and large. She has posted Q&A videos on her YouTube channel explaining the condition, even filming herself in the middle of a panic attack on one occasion.
Zoella, real name Zoe Sugg, explains, “A lot of young people look at me and think, ‘She has the perfect life: she’s got the boyfriend, the house, the dog, the book, the successful YouTube channel.” She continues, “Not everything is perfect. Sometimes I have days where I don’t want to leave my bed or I’ll have multiple panic attacks.” Zoella is now an ambassador for mental health charity, Mind, and hopes to raise more awareness for the condition.
Never give up
The YouTube sensation’s success has not always been super easy for the star. After releasing her first novel last year, she faced a backlash from people who accused the vlogger of failing to write the book herself, instead using a ghost-writer provided by publishers, Penguin. At the time she released a statement saying, “Of course I was going to have help from Penguin’s editorial team in telling my story, which I talked about from the beginning” and added, “Everyone needs help when they try something new. The story and the characters of Girl Online are mine.”
But instead of giving up and walking away from her story, she came back this year with Girl Online: On Tour and this time, wrote the book by herself with only the help of an editor. She said in a YouTube video, “It’s a learning curve” writing the book alone, that is “all very exciting”.
It’s okay to feel like a failure sometimes
Zoella has often been very frank when it comes to admitting if the pressure of being a YouTuber millions of followers is too much sometimes, and this is okay too. We all have good and bad days, and sometimes you will feel like nothing is going the way you hoped it would, whether that’s in your career, private or social life. Take a step back, and think about exactly what it is you want and start focusing on the things that are going right, and soon you’ll be back on track again.
