Kale? chia seeds? It seems every month there is a new superfood buzzword dominating Pinterest, but the latest is really worth your attention. Meet turmeric – an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial root that is used traditionally in Indian cooking.
So why exactly is it so great? Well, minor inflammation plays a key role in the majority of chronic diseases, meaning turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties have been linked to the prevention and treatment of cancer, Alzheimer’s and other degenerative conditions. In addition to the fantastic health benefits, this super spice is a must for your beauty regime too, and is particularly great for brightening and whitening your skin and teeth.

A MORNING SMOOTHIE
1 cup frozen mango
2 cups coconut water
Thumb of grated ginger
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp honey
For a morning boost, try whipping up this quick, mango lassi smoothie. In addition to turmeric and mango, there is zingy ginger to aid digestion, coconut water for morning hydration, and soothing, anti-bacterial honey, to fight off that pesky cold. Amazing!
Simply place all the ingredients in your smoothie maker and blend for a delicious start to your day!
A TURMERIC AND HONEY FACE MASK
1 tsp of turmeric
1 tsp of honey
1 tsp of yogurt
A splash of water if your mix is too thick!
The anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties of this multi-tasking wonder make it the perfect face mask ingredient, combating acne, dullness and preventing aging. The addition of hydrating honey and yogurt (which contains lactic acid for some exfoliating action) make this mask the perfect one step quick fix that you can whip up at home whenever your skin needs some TLC.
Alternatively, if you don’t fancy the DIY solution, try brightening Santa Maria Novella Turmeric Cream for an ‘instant facial’ effect.
Simply apply to your face, leave for 15-20 minutes and rinse to reveal a radiant complexion!
TURMERIC TOOTH MASK
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp coconut oil
1-2 drops of peppermint oil
Now this is the one I was seriously skeptical about. Turmeric is a powerful dye when it touches fabric, so the idea of smothering the bright yellow substance all over my teeth was scary, to say the least. However, turmeric actually has a seriously whitening effect on the teeth, lifting stains, minimizing decay and promoting healthy gums.
Take a spare toothbrush and apply to the teeth as you would toothpaste, leave for up to 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly!
1 mug of a milk of your choice
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 cinnamon stick
2 cardamon pods
1 thumb of grated ginger
1 tsp of honey or maple syrup
If you’re a fan of a hot drink before bed then this is for you! This spiced, milky, soothing drink is a hugely popular coffee alternative, loved by hipster cafes, Instagram and celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow. This mug of golden goodness is wonderful for your immune system, high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, manganese, and iron – as well as being totally delicious!
