These are the best Netflix shows to watch right now. As the weather starts to get cooler I inevitably end up staying in more and that means watching more TV. But after being home for most of this summer due to Quarantine, I was almost running out of shows to binge. In desperation, I went searching for some new material and I discovered some gems on Netflix.
Here are the best shows to watch on Netflix right now. I promise you, there is something for everyone on this list.
I was so late to the game on this one and I am not sure how I missed it because I adore Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy. And now I am obsessed with Dan Levy and I just want to be best friends with Annie Murphy’s character, Alexis. It’s about a super-rich family that loses everything and ends up living in the town they bought as a joke, Schitt’s Creek. I think you know where it goes from here. Yep, this is one of the best Netflix shows to watch for a laugh.
Right now Netflix only has through Season 5, but since the series finale aired back in April I am sure it’s only a matter of time before the sixth and final season makes its way onto the streaming platform.
For Fantasy Fans:
The Umbrella Academy
I was a huge fan of the first season of this kickass fantasy show with its talented young cast and end of the world plot. Also, Mary J. Blige as part of a mysterious assassin team is a dream come true.
Now that the second season is out it is at the top of my watch list. It’s kind of hard to explain the show in just a few sentences so all I’ll say is if you liked The Magicians and/or Jessica Jones, you’ll love this.
The Family Show focused on Career Women:
Maddie Townsend is a recently separated mom looking to get back to work after spending the past decade and a half as the stay-at-home parent. Her two best friends convince her to go into business with them and they open the most gorgeous spa and fitness club I have ever seen. I wish I could work out there.
Random appearance alert: Jamie-Lynn Spears, Britney’s sister, as the mistress and baby-mama of Maggie’s soon-to-be ex-husband played by Chris Klien.
Right now there is only one season available but after a cliffhanger of an ending, it has to be back for Season 2. It just has to!
The Tear Jerker:
I cannot wait for the second season of this drama set in a remote Californian town called Virgin River. Mel Monroe is a Nurse Practitioner looking to escape a tragic past in LA. She takes a job at the one and only doctor’s office in Virgin River run by Doc Mullins (Tim Matheson who is playing a very similar character to his Dr. Breeland on Hart of Dixie, another great Netflix binge). Of course, she finds love with the gorgeous local bar owner but like any good drama, she must confront her past to move on.
The next season has already been taped so I’m praying to the Netflix gods that it’s released soon.
True Life Mysteries:
The classic Sunday night show is back and better than ever. I used to watch Unsolved Mysteries all the time when I was a kid and it gave me such nightmares. I’m still not sure why my mom let me watch it.
My favorite episode is about a mystery that took place only an hour and a half west of where I grew up. I never knew UFOs were abducting people in Massachusetts! This is a great show if you’re in the mood for something spooky.
Getting Ready for Halloween:
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
And speaking of spooky, I know this is marketed towards the teen and college audience but I love the reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. If you were a fan of the original like me don’t be fooled, this is nothing like the Melissa Hart version. It’s dark and twisted and oh so chilling with appearances by Judas, King Herod, and the Devil himself. But even with the Satanic rites that take place and the threat of the world ending once or twice, Sabrina’s teenage angst is still accessible to any girl who once wore a kilt and knee socks to school. This is one of the best Netflix shows for creepy vibes!
With three seasons available on Netflix, this should take you for a bit. Season 4 is set to be released later this year but it will be the show’s last and I can’t imagine the ending they have conjured up.
I think I’ve watched every episode of the classic 90s teen show, Sister, Sister. And now I can’t wait to rewatch it. The cast, the plot, those bucket hats? Absolutely amazing. If you’ve never heard of this show it’s about two adopted teenage girls who discover that they are twins after running into each other at their local mall. Because that happens to us all, right? The Mowry Twins are so charming and I will watch Jackée Harry in anything because she is fabulous.
The episodes are short, clocking in at around 22 minutes each, but with 6 seasons you too can discover why this show is still relevant 26 years after it first premiered.
Now, go Netflix and chill.
