Almost all successful entrepreneurs of our time started a company in their twenties. Although it sounds really scary to start your own company at such a young age, it definitely has its benefits. Yes, it will probably be harder because of the fact that you don’t have management experience yet, which is what most investors and business supporters are looking for, but coming just out of uni comes with an attitude that most older entrepreneurs would wish for.
If you have a talent or genius business idea, go for it! People will always be skeptical no matter what you do, so choose YOU and work on your dream (otherwise someone else will hire you to built theirs).
And if you are still not convinced, we give you 4 reason why you should start sooner rather than later:
#1 – Time will never be perfect
Stop making excuses why you shouldn’t start sooner rather than later because timing will never be perfect. There will always be a reason to postpone your plans. No matter how many years of experience, knowledge and studies you have, you can only learn entrepreneurship by doing it!
“It’s not about having years of experience. It’s about ambition, passion, and creativity. If you want it, you will figure out how to build it. ” – Jamie Walker, CEO of SweatGuru and Fit Approach
#2 – You have nothing to lose
You are young, probably do not have a mortgage or children yet and no built-up lifestyle to maintain. Starting your own business means responsibilities which you need to keep. And with almost nothing to lose and your flexible lifestyle, your 20ies will the best time to start.
#3 – Fresh perspective
Fresh out of uni, without many years of work-experience can have its benefits. You have a totally different mind-set than people who have years of work experience and already have a built-up life. Young entrepreneurs have an energy that makes older entrepreneurs jealous.
Another benefit is that you will have a more flexible and open-minded perspective than the way-it-is-supposed-to-be mindset from people who mostly have years of experience in established companies and board-rooms. Your ideas and solution will be innovative, new, ground-breaking and a fresh breath of air.
#4 – Now is the time to be selfish
With no big responsibilities and in your 20ies you can be selfish. You have no children to provide for, probably no mortgage to take care of and the only one you should look after is you. This freedom you have now will eventually go away. Starting your own business takes a financial and mental toll and 200% of your time. With fewer responsibilities you can focus on you and building your career.
In the beginning there will be a lot of ups and downs, you will handle this a lot easier when you have only you to focus on.

I set up my business at 19, and I definitely agree it’s a time when you really have nothing to lose so you can go for it! I’ve managed to keep it steady over the years and five years later want to grow it even more.

I have been waiting for someone to cosign on the ‘nothing to lose’ argument! I so agree, the twenties are the best time to carry out your dreams and business plans. If you fail, you still have almost your whole life in front of you to turn things around!
